“My friends want to skate/ski/snowboard but I don’t know how, can you help me?”
---
This was supposed to be a fun, care free weekend in the mountains, filled with laughter, good food and not worrying about anything for a couple weeks. But no, her stupid friends had to be adventurous and want to try something that Brooke has never actually done, nor shown any interest in before.
Snowboarding.
She grimaced at the thought of the utter pain that she was going to find herself in if she couldn’t talk her friends out of this ridiculous idea. This could be disastrous for someone like Brooke, who never included herself in any sort of sports activity for the sheer reason that she tended to be accident prone and basically did not want to end up with broken legs or a broken neck or broken anything for that matter. She was perfectly content with just staying in her cabin while her friends go did their snowboarding/skiing thing, but they insisted that she come with them. So now she was stuck and will most likely end up in an ambulance when this was all said and done.
She was determined not to make a complete fool of herself though, so she managed to sneak away from her friends so she could go rent a snowboard and damn well teach herself how to do it or at least look like she could handle a simple task of riding at least a few feet of snow.
Unfortunately that was easier said than done. It was hard to move in all the layers she was wearing, and the goggles that they made her wear made it hard to see and the snow was just so fucking slippery, and it was hard enough to walk on the damn stuff, let alone ride a stupid board on it.
Despite all that, and her tremendous anxiety over this, she got herself out on the mountain, a safe part of the mountain that the kids usually used for lessons. But it was even harder than she thought it would be, and she hadn’t even gotten the stupid straps on her feet before she fell on her ass. She kept trying though, and even managed to move a few feet before falling again.
Frustrated with herself, she kicked the board off her feet and away from her and just decided to pout for a little while, just because.
That was when she noticed a group behind her, that seemed to actually know what they were doing on these stupid boards. In fact, they were really good, and they had the attention of a few onlookers that were straggling about. Brooke envied them, they made it look so easy, she just didn’t understand and it was driving her nuts.
She watched them for a little while, as each of them went back and forth with tricks and whatever they were doing, before she became discouraged and decided to focus on her own issue. But after a few moments she heard the sound of snow crunching, coming closer to her, and when she looked up she saw that one of them had broken off from the rest of the group to come wander over towards her.
“Hey,” She greeted, glancing towards the snowboard that laid sadly a few feet in front of Brooke. “Y’know, that works better if it’s on your feet.”
Brooke scoffed and shook her head. “Not my feet. I think I make it look bad.”
“Aw, come on, you can’t be that bad.” The girl grinned and flipped up her goggles over her helmet. Brooke had to stop herself from staring at the sight of this strange girls grinning face, she had that kinda smile that was just the perfect mix of cocky and playful and it had Brooke’s stomach doing a sharp twist at the sight of it.
“Oh, trust me, I can be.” She retorted. “The only reason I’m trying is because I don’t wanna look like a complete idiot in front of my stupid, adventurous friends.”
“I think you’re exaggerating, come on, show me what you got. Maybe I can help you out.”
Brooke didn’t bother asking why, because when a girl as pretty as this girl was willingly paying attention to you, you don’t ask questions, you go with flow, and whatever happens, happens. Brooke certainly wasn’t gonna pass this chance up, she might as well find something enjoyable out of this whole ridiculous situation. Even if she knew she was gonna fuck up so bad in front of this girl with her extreme clumsiness, so she certainly hoped this would be worth it.
She hesitantly strapped the board back to her feet, and insisted that the girl helped her stand up, she obliged, but it looked like she kinda wanted to see how bad Brooke really was.
“Try not to laugh too hard, kay? This could get ugly.”
Just barely after the words were out of her mouth, the board slipped under her and she nearly went tumbling down, but thankfully, Avery hadn’t let go yet and managed to balance her, despite giggling madly at her, which Brooke could only roll her eyes, not particularly surprised at the reaction.
“Well, okay. I guess you weren’t exaggerating.” She smirked, making Brooke laugh a little bit. “How about some help, huh? Free of charge.”
Now Brooke couldn’t help herself. “And why would you do that? You don’t even know me.”
Avery just shrugged. “Well, I mean, I would hate for you to embarrass yourself too much in front of your friends. And because I’m such a nice person and you desperately need help.”
Brooke laughed, shaking her head, completely charmed by this stranger, but determined to do her best to keep up with the girl as much as she could. She tended to be pretty good at this whole flirting thing too, and she definitely wanted this to be a two way street.
“Well, I suppose I can’t pass up such a nice offer, so why not. As long as you promise to help me and not just laugh at me.”
“Can’t I do both?”
Okay, she had that one coming, and she obviously couldn’t hold back the laugh that bubbled out her lips. This girl was so much fun and Brooke couldn’t understand why she had approached her in the first place. But she was glad she did, she would certainly make this whole ordeal more interesting, hopefully in more ways than one.
“Alright, alright, very funny. You gonna help me or what?”
The girl nodded. “Okay, okay, I got ya. I’m Avery, by the way”
“Brooke.” She told her with a small smirk. “Alright, show me what ya got.”
Avery nodded. “Alright, now look, your stance is crap, honestly. No offense or anything, but if you’re standing like you’re gonna fall all the time, you’re gonna fall.”
Brooke shrugged. “Fair enough.”
This went on for awhile, the girl making sarcastic remarks, but actually managing to help Brooke out more than she thought she would. Brooke didn’t think she was capable of actually being able to stand on the stupid board for more than a minute, but this girl managed to get her to ride down a whole hill and even manage to stop without falling. But then Brooke got so excited at this, she fell over as she laughed. Avery skidded to a stop next to her, grinning, and looking like a proud teacher.
“See? You got it. Nothing to it.”
“Oh, come one, if you hadn’t come along I’d have been out here all night trying to work up the courage just to stand up.” She grinned, finally calming down from her laughing fit, unbuckling the board from her feet and tossing it to the side as Avery plopped next to her. “Why did you come help a poor non-snowboarding loser like me anyways?”
Avery shrugged a little bit, slightly hesitant now. “I just saw you chilling, figured I’d see what’s up.”
“So you just approach random strangers on mountains at a resort that has thousands of people around here?”
Avery laughed. “I don’t make a habit of it, I guess you just caught me on a good day. Besides, I’ve only been here two weeks anyways.”
Slightly surprised, because Brooke had pegged her for a local with her knowledge of snowboarding and the mountain. “You’re visiting? I kind of assumed that you were from around here.”
“Well, I’ve come here every year with my family since I was a kid. The mountain doesn’t change much. I’m actually from California.”
“Really? Me too! Where?”
Avery grinned over at her, pleasantly surprised. “San Clemente. SoCal.”
“Oh, wow. I’m from Anaheim. You’re only like, an hour away from me. How weird.”
“Super weird. Maybe we’ll have to hang out sometime back home. You ever try surfing? I hear I’m a pretty good teacher.”
Brooke grinned and rolled her eyes. “Don’t even go there, but it might be fun to see how good of a surfer you are.”
Avery smirked at her, and Brooke found herself staring intently at the girl, this weird connection forming between them that neither of them could understand, but Brooke didn’t really care. She liked Avery, there was plenty of time to get to know her.
They were interrupted a few moments later by Avery’s friends shouting for her, something about getting some food, and Brooke knew she would have to get back to her cabin before her own friends started getting suspicious of her whereabouts.
“Well, hey,” Avery spoke up on their climb back up. “I’m in cabin 36, if you wanna come hang out later.”
Brooke smirked over at her at the suggestion, somehow knowing that this wasn’t finished between them. Not even close. This was just getting started.
