skype is INCREDIBLY heavy tho!!
What bothers me though, is that Iâve never had issues with it before! and from what Iâve heard, most of my friends are also struggling with the app so I have nooooo idea whatâs going on tbh
Chekov since we're on the subject, recently i heard that russian has something like 11 genders in grammar, so i was so excited thinking there wpuld be tons of ways to define something in a more neutral way. But now i'm doubtful from what you posted..
Haha well Iâm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Iâm afraid that itâs not really true. In... any way you look at it.
To be clear, grammatical gender is different from physical gender anyway. Grammatical gender is called gender, but it has very little to do with actual gender. It is called the same thing, but only because it also happens to correspond with peopleâs âgenderâ.
For example, most nouns in Russian have one of three âgendersâ (thatâs only 3, not 11) - masculine, feminine, and neuter. Thatâs just a grammatical category, it has nothing to do with âgenderâ in the social definition. I mean, at one point one might have influenced the other, but if you sort them too closely, russian birds become exclusively female, Russian tables become male and eggs become neutral. Doesnât make sense.
The âneutralâ gender sounds great, but keep in mind that itâs something that only inanimate objects take. We do have âgender-neutral-pronounsâ but those are only for THINGS, not for living objects. Itâs kind of like âitâ in English. Itâs even considered somewhat harsh to refer to animals as âitâ instead of as âhe/sheâ. You would certainly never use it for a person unless you wanted to be extremely derogatory.
What Russian DOES have is 6 grammatical cases. So that means in Russian, a noun will change form depending on itâs grammatical function and position within the sentence. I could draw up a chart here and go through declensions but I would rather not because itâs confusing and boring.
The take-away message is that it doesnât make Russian more flexible, and certainly not in terms of gender. If anything, it makes it more RIGID because you have to literally consider SO many different aspects of one word before you stick it into the sentence (What gender is it? Is it the subject of the sentence? Is it being acted upon by another object? Is it posses by another object? Is it plural? It is an adjective? If itâs an adjective, is the noun itâs describing feminine or masculine? etc...)
