How do the geiko and maiko differ in i guess social status from like more mainstream culture in the area? I guess what im saying is its very obvious that there are asian popstars and girl bands on MTV, and then the geisha. How do they compare in social status/class/ and wealth?

For us, geishas' fans around the world, they're kind of celebrities, we follow their careers, desperately want to meet them and stuff like that. so yeah, we treat them like popstars :D

but for their customers they're a living arts masters, they treat them as very skilled artists who give them pleasure... with their art not bodies, ofc! :3 That's the same thing as in music industry.

for instance, among ordinary Japanese people, they're most likely anonymous girls. it's rare to find people who know their exact names, the name of each district and traditions. the fact is most of Nihonjin don't know so much about karyukai. They're like 'oh okay so we've got geishas in our country but what are their role in the culture?'. Even though there are many docs and tv shows featuring geimaiko (for example "Koimaiko" with Satsuki and Kyouka).

I can't tell you anything more, because I don't live in Japan and I'm not a Japanese girl. I have to make a bigger research and then I'll (MAYBE) be able to tell you about the exact situation.

for that girl who wanted a hair relaxer- i dont honestly think there are hair relaxers u can purchase over the counter.... unless u go to the ethnic sections of stores. most relaxers are also for ethnic hair which may conflict with white hair so.... it would seem to not be a good idea. At a hair salon there are treatements like Awapui straightening streatments, keratin treatments, and brazillian blow outs... A lil expensive but u dont want ur hair to fall out....
