2019 - Fanfic Year in Review

I’ve seen a few of these on my dash but the prompts I used were based on @greenapricot ‘s one. My fics will be linked at the bottom of the post.

Total number of completed stories: Technically 2, but that’s if I count spinning on that dizzy edge as completed (as I intended for it to be 1 chapter but am now writing a chapter 2). My other 2 fics are either still in progress or at least were by the end of 2019.

Total word count: 23527, although I am also roughly 10k words into my follow up chapter for spinning on that dizzy edge, so if I’d managed to post that before new year it would have been higher.

Fandoms written in: Endeavour.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? More. i.e. I expected it to be none whatsoever. 2019 was really A Year for me on A03 because it was the year that I discovered Endeavour which has basically changed my life?? I really can’t believe how much I’ve written and posted this year, even if word-count-wise it’s not a lot

What’s your own favourite story of the year? This really changes all the time and to be fair I haven’t got a lot to choose from, but I think my favourite is I’m not falling for you (I already did) because it’s the first and only time I’ve started writing an Endeavour fic with the specific intention of it being multi-chapter, and it’s just so nice to write. I’ve got a chapter in progress and two more after that and I’m so so excited.

Did you take any writing risks this year? I don’t feel like I did, but I suppose posting anything into a new fandom is technically a risk. I didn’t know the Endeavour fandom very well, but I got some really lovely comments on my first fic, I know how miserable drinking alone is, which inspired me to carry on!

Also, posting but I want it (it’s a crime) felt a bit less safe than the other things I’d posted because it was something that had just fallen out of my head in one night, and was definitely more on the comedy rather than fluff side, so I was worried it would seem rushed. Saying that, though, I’ve been so proud of everything I’ve written this year so nothing was really a risk.

Do you have any fanfic goals for the new year? Honestly just to carry on writing. I also want to try out writing some new pairings, because so far I’ve done exclusively Morse/Jakes (I have a lot of feelings about Peter Jakes). I’ve currently got a Morse/Nick fic in the works, and I’m considering perhaps branching out into Morse/Max but I’m not sure yet. I’d also like to branch out into other fandoms because I have a lot of abandoned WIPs that I want to get off my chest but I don’t know whether I like them enough to bother finishing them to be honest.

Most fun story to write: But I want it (it’s  a crime) was so fun to write because it, especially the first chapter, was in a more crack fic style than fluff, and it was also fun to write Morse from a different perspective, as someone who never joined the police. And the second chapter of it, although technically I posted this in 2020, was equally fun because it was just a whole lot of fluff without any of the typical morseverse angst that pops up in my other fics.

Biggest disappointment: I suppose taking so long to write the second chapter of spinning on that dizzy edge. I didn’t really think much of it until recently when I (finally) made a bit of progress on it and realised the first chapter was posted in MAY. I just kept reaching points where I’d get utterly stuck with it, and at the same time had my mind on writing other fics so it’s kind of taken a back seat until recently.

Biggest surprise: That I’m even here, on tumblr and in this fandom and actively writing and reading fics that I love. This is absolutely not the direction I expected my 2019 to go but I couldn’t be happier that it has.

Spent a couple of hours tinkering with this today to finish it...I’ve never been any good at knowing when to leave something well alone and usually end up ‘overcooking’ it, so I had to be really strict with myself!
