The new batch of cosmonauts had an exercise in emergency desert landing procedures outside Baikonur over the last few days. They learn how to make shelter from the Soyuz parachute and how to get water from condensation of plants. The temperatures ranged from 38º to 42º C during the day!

Four newly minted cosmonauts joined the ranks today. Sergei Kud-Sverchkov, Denis Matveyev, Sergei Prokopyev and Ivan Vagner passed their exams and have been promoted from cosmonaut candidate to test cosmonaut. Three others: Andrei Babkin, Aleksei Khomenchuk and Svyatoslav Morozov have to re-complete some training to be promoted. The panel consisted of Vladimir Solovyov, director of Mission Control Moscow; Sergei Krikalev, head of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre; and Vladimir Mitin, Roscosmos deputy head of the manned space program.
