Episode 1

This classic, late 1970s anime had a 50 episode run before they had to wrap things up.

For those who have only heard about the series briefly or not at all, Cyborg 009 started as a manga created by Shotaro Ishinomori 1963 and is a story about nine people from various countries and backgrounds who are kidnapped by the criminal Black Ghost organization and turned into cyborgs to function as living human weapons fit for even space travel without space suits. They escape with Doctor Gilmore’s help and then establish a base and band together as a team and extended family of sorts to fight their former captors and save the world.

/An important note before I go on with the review: This anime series is a product of its time so it has some racist character designs of Pyunma, Chang and G. Junior./

In this series Joe and Ivan are the main leaders and the first four cyborgs were never put in cryogenic tubes for 40 years. In addition, the series does not start with the cyborg team's escape.

The team fought and defeated the original Black ghost org leaders 5 years ago and have tried to settle into their civilian lives again. Dr. Gilmore lives in a large house on a cliff by the sea,(its not like the beachouse in the 2000 series) acting as Ivans caretaker, Jet (002) and Joe (cyborg 009) have become racers and compete against each other, Chang (006) branched out his restaurant into a vast and successful chain of restaurants and Francoise alias cyborg 003 who in this version never lost her parents and did meet up with her brother again, went back to the Opera Ballet in Paris, etc.

The episode starts with a story about the norse creation myth and then switch over to Doctor Isaac Gilmores house during a thunderstorm. It is dark inside and (cyborg 001) Ivan is in his sleeping cot crying while levitating small things around the room as Gilmore hurries over and tries to calm the cyborg child down. Ivan has sensed a superhuman danger is active with his psychic powers and warns the Doctor. Gilmore quickly contacts Joe and the others, except Francoise who is told by Albert (004) and GB (007) as the two europeans are sent to Paris to tell their fellow european in person instead. Naturally she goes with them since Al is a driver and pilot and all, trying to keep a low profile....

During this they are introduced to the viewers and we pan back to the current race Jet (002) and Joe compete in - one that gets interrupted when a giant shows up, destroys the place and leaves a message in rune text.

Next we're back to Dr Gilmores house where Joe, Jet and the rest of the team: Fran, Albert, GB, G.Junior (005), Chang (006), Pyunma (008) have gathered. The old man tells them what they know so far and has also translated the runes - they mean Jotunheim, the place the giants lived after a fight with the gods in the norse mythology.

Though Albert in particular is very sceptical, he does not believe in gods or mythical beings. Ivan predicted the giants are only the beginning though!

The child suddenly alerts them of another attack and they watch a recent news broadcast - the giant and two other giants have been sighted approaching a military base with nuclear bombs!

Ivan tells Joe and Jet to fly ahead as the others, sans Gilmore and Ivan, hurry to board the Dolphin- their air/submarine ship.

The military fail to stop the giants though Jet and Joe arrive and attack the trio. During the fight they manage to damage and drive off one of the giants but Joe gets hurt by another, Jet is worried his internal nuclear powersource might overheat and explode, Joe urges him to focus on defending the military base and leave him as he might explode, but Jet refuses. One of the giants are closing in on them and is about to stomp them! but then the other cyborgs arrive to help!

G. Junior grabs the giants foot and uses his superstrength to save Joe and Jet. Next the rest of the team attack the giants and show their powers as well.

The second giant retreats after a barrage of attacks but the third is moving across the water in spite of Pyunma and Changs efforts and reaches the base, activating the system that launches a nuclear missile!

The military and Cyborgs watch in alarm and horror but can’t stop it. However, all of a sudden its like the heavens open and a figure resembling the norse god Odin floats down. The nuclear missile just disappears and is never seen again. The danger is over...for now.

One of the military officers kneels, believing its a real god. We switch to see Gilmore and Ivan commenting then quickly back to the others. Que dramatic music!

Thats it, thats the first episode diving into the Norse mythos arc.

I liked this series its wild, it can be funny, goofy, dramatic and deeply tragic and almost anything could happen. Beware if you dont like violence or death and gore though, people die onscreen and there is some body horror as well.

The character I tend to like the most in all versions is Albert, but Jet, G. Junior, Pyunma and GB are other favorites in all movies, series and comics.

largely for the purpose of building my own muscle-memory, i drew the entire 009 team in my own style! i blended in a lot of palette and hair choices from across the various iterations, and while i have plenty of room to continue developing my own concepts for them i’m pretty pleased with my first pass! constructive criticism is welcome, just please be kind 😊
