trying to figure out Definitive Designs for my main worldstate little guys... here is today’s work on my dao and da2 protagonists, ivar, minerva, eilidh, and keir :)
morrigan’s fond kind-of-bragging “a lofty title, but he wears it well ❤️” abt a romanced warden being the hero of ferelden is so good with ivar. he’s constantly torn up abt how little he deserves his various titles so she just shrugs and does all the contented smugness for him
my first attempts at voice lines if an ally gets knocked out. minerva:
(Protagonist) Don’t die here! We’ve come so far!
(Romanced protagonist) No! I won’t let you go!
(Ivar) Ivar, please, I need you!
(Alistair) No, no, get up! Alistair, get up!
(Morrigan) They’ll pay for it, Morrigan!
(Dog) I told you not to bring that animal! Don’t come crying to me.
(Leliana) The Maker doesn’t need you yet!
(Sten) This isn’t your atonement, Sten. Stay with us!
(Zevran) Zevran, that isn’t funny!
(Romanced Zevran) Zevran? Zev, please! Someone help him, please!
(Wynne) Why won’t that old woman stay back?
(Oghren) Is Oghren dead?
(Shale) If you’re going to die on me, you could at least bleed!
(Loghain) Get up, Mac Tir! Your life isn’t yours to lose.
Has anyone noticed we’re losing?
If this is a plan, it isn’t working!
and ivar:
(Protagonist) Oh, no, no, fight’s not done, no time for that.
(Romanced protagonist) I’ll take care of it! Just rest your pretty head and don’t die.
(Minerva) Oh, Surana. When are you going to learn your limits?
(Alistair) Up and at ‘em, boy, you’re stronger than this!
(Morrigan) Morrigan, stay down if you’re hurt.
(Romanced Morrigan) This woman will be the death of me.
(Dog) You fucking monsters, that’s my dog!
(Leliana) Leliana! I’m coming!
(Sten) If Sten admits who’s stronger, I’ll help him up.
(Zevran) This is how all your jobs go, huh, Zevran?
(Wynne) They went for Wynne! Oh, now it’s personal.
(Oghren) You’ll pay for spilling dwarven blood tenfold!
(Shale) Stand up, warrior!
(Loghain) After all that? Oh, the ancestors do love irony.
We’re losing people. Let’s not lose our nerve.
Don’t panic! I’m still with you.
my silly hc is that ivar was so not bothered about marriage in orzammar that he had a pact with adal helmi that if they were ever getting really pressured into marriage they would just marry each other bc another husband might try to stop her being a warrior and another wife might want him to get his act together
beginning to operate under the belief that ivar is doing something on the aromantic spectrum and morrigan is doing something on the asexual spectrum but because they are each other’s only serious relationship and they live in dragon age thedas, they’re not really aware of these concepts at all and one of them goes “probably everyone else is weird and/or lying” and the other one nods. and good for them
it’s interesting to figure out what ivar and zevran’s relationship is in the main worldstate. in solo ivar, ivar is operating from a backstory of such intense privilege that it takes him all the way until zevran’s full backstory reveal to suddenly be like, “wait, this nobody killer who works for me, like a thousand other nobody killers have worked for and against me and died doing it, is as much of a fully realised and traumatised person as i am. that’s crazy. did everyone know this.”
he didn’t, like, think of zevran in an intentionally cold, dismissive or mercenary way before that. he always liked zevran and they were friendly, ivar’s almost always graciously friendly whoever you are and zevran’s charming and funny, but he didn’t really think about him. ‘lowly killer you can’t trust, but who you can easily make owe you enough that you can use him’ was an extremely normal and familiar category of person to him that he could comfortably slot zevran into and assume that was all there was to know, at a time when so little around him made familiar sense and his brain was grabbing what it could get. i don’t know that ivar is consciously putting his relationship to zevran in these terms but he’s not deeply considering it or him at all
realistically he only happens to know much more about zevran than he did about anyone who worked for him in orzammar because a) they’re in such close quarters for months so obviously they talk and b) ivar doesn’t have the resources anymore to get another assassin with a snap of his fingers, so if zevran betrays him or dies, he’s not as replaceable. in orzammar he would have occupied thousands of similar people with work, consuming their lives whether with hours of labour spent or deadly risks taken for his overall benefit and then replacing them when they were spent, and he would mostly have done so just by passing word through gorim without even seeing their faces. this was unremarkable. nobody would ever have dreamed of him doing anything else or even considering what these people might have going on internally. it’s one of the ways that, no matter how drastic a change he undergoes, ivar’s exile just can’t realistically eradicate every part of his worldview overnight after being treated as the centre of the world since he was born
princes are terrible people. anyway, the point is that this can’t happen in the same way in joint worldstate, because if zevran is going to tell anyone about rinna, it’s going to be the warden who he’s in love with, right? zevran holds this so closely that it would feel strange for him to tell multiple people, and there’s simply no reason for him to feel such a bond with ivar—who is easy to get along with but, for the reasons outlined above, clearly a subpar friend to zevran in particular—in a world where minerva exists and ivar isn’t the sole warden responsible for sparing his life and giving him new purpose. so either a) i engineer a situation where zevran has to tell him for some reason, b) ivar never has the realisation that zevran is a full person like him and by extension so is everyone else, or c) ivar comes to this realisation by some other means. c feels like the correct answer but then what are those means? is witnessing zevran falling in love with minerva enough to spur that kind of realisation abt his personhood? can that really compare to the visceral weight of discovering they have as much specific in common as to both have experienced suicidal thoughts after being tricked into killing someone they loved? so maybe he does have to know about rinna... somehow...
and however i make this happen, i now potentially get a bit more power over when it happens. so at what point in the narrative is it most useful to see this sudden moment of “oh, zev’s a whole person i can relate to, and so was everyone else who i never even thought about, incidentally shattering any remaining illusions about the entire social structure i was raised in and also meaning i was never the fun harmless beloved prince i thought i was but a destroyer of real and important lives, a sinner long before i killed my brother”? when can it affect ivar the most and have an impact on his choices? much to consider
at least after ivar is made paragon, a chronicler can rework his success in the provings as proof of the ancestors’ favour that the people of orzammar foolishly ignored when they exiled him, blah blah blah. i imagine it was a slightly thorny issue before they decided they liked him again that he had been winning provings up until literally the day before they exiled him and then immediately won one again when he came back to visit. the ancestors kind of could not be broadcasting louder that they love this guy.
