dearest ( continued from here ) :
IT SEEMED TO BE a rare occasion for Kaede to ever even get proper sleep these days – every waking hour was to be spent at the piano anymore, so much so that it was often that she would forget to eat at all. And even when she managed to pry herself away from those ivory keys, they would follow her to her dreams, songs of black and white enveloping her, forcing into her throat and lungs until she was suffocating on the very thing she loved most. Even worse than that was the sound of her mother’s voice, which rose above even the loud pounding of the keys.
“ KAEDE, why are you not practicing? Why are you not playing? Do you even realize the embarrassment you bring to your parents when you slack off like this? A pathetic girl who can’t even play a simple melody such as this doesn’t deserve to rest! Get up, you wreck, play it again. I will count you off this time. One, two, three… ”
SHE awakens with a start, breaths deep as it seems impossible to draw in enough air. She is not dreaming anymore, and yet she can still hear the sound of the piano in her head, chasing after her, haunting her endlessly. Her body is trembling and she’s only vaguely aware of the beads of sweat that have formed along her brow, but at the very least her mother is no longer following her for the time being.
A glance to her clock. It’s so late in the night, just a couple hours past midnight. She’s been asleep for about four hours now, but that’s okay, if she gets up now she’ll be able to squeeze in just enough practice time to make up–
RANTARO’S voice fills her ears, attaches itself to her mind. Her heart flutters.
“ DID you have a nightmare…? ”
BREATHLESS, the pianist turns her attention to him, who lies next to her joined in the warmth of her duvet. A clammy hand reaches up to wipe the droplets of sweat from her forehead, then a weak smile ghosts her lips. He is here with her, and she is safe. She can hold off from practicing, at least for just a moment.
“ Ah… ” Her voice is soft, barely above a whisper. “ Did I wake you? I’m sorry. ”
IT takes her a moment, but Kaede manages to convince herself to curl back into him, letting his arms and essence overtake her, protect her. The melody of the piano and blood rushing through her ears is soon replaced with much more beautiful music, that being the beating of his heart. She’s only half aware of her sleep-laced actions, but her lips find their way to his chin, his jawline, a trail of butterflies down to his throat. He’s so warm, so comforting, and when she speaks again, she doesn’t bother lifting her mouth away from his skin.
“ I’M sorry. I really am. ” Her shoulders are shaking, and then she’s sobbing, crying into his arms as the memories flood her eyes in the form of tears. “ I’m really no good. I’m sorry. ”
at first , he was quiet. trying to asses the situation. wondering what could it be-- worried , what had kaede been dreaming about ? the tension he had felt across her body , the hurried whispers that he had not been able to make out and the pulling away -- as if she were going somewhere else entirely. rantaro questioned it. after all , it was only natural to want to find out so to help the person you loved the most , wasn’t it ? but he would understand , if it was such a thing that one wouldn’t talk about. even he had nightmares buried down.
he was here for her , and he wouldn’t ever plan on letting go. not as long as the two of them could remain right here , together. his arms wrapped tightly , further leaning into kaede , was the proof of it. and he wanted her to always know that , to not ever forget that he would always remain in this very place.
“ no , it’s alright. ” his voice is quiet , but warm as it would usually be around her. it’s reassuring. and with it , a hand is moved to stroke at the back of her hair with a soft hum. “ i kinda did on my own actually . . . but if you had woken me up , that’s nothing to say sorry for , y’know . . . ? you matter more to me than-- ”
but at kaede’s kisses , he stops talking. his mouth hangs open and his breath is caught in the back of his throat for a little moment. it felt like she always found a way to catch him off-guard-- her presence . . . her presence in itself was a happy surprise , something he could have never expected in his entire life. a serendipity , wasn’t that what it was called ? but he just couldn’t place it into words , how much he held her dear.
there wasn’t any moment in which he would stop loving her.
not even now , when the moment is broken and she breaks down in his arms.
hesitation didn’t exist in his actions , not even a pause before he reacted to it and pulled her even closer than she had been before -- bodies pressed together , hearts beating in unison , the tip of his chin resting on the top of her head. his eyes came to a close as he rubbed her back comfortingly.
he wasn’t going anywhere , no matter how it was.
“ you’re okay. ” his tone is still warm , but it’s more firm. and more than anything , it’s sincere. “ you’re okay as you are , kaede. i couldn’t ask for someone better , and i never would. ”
