Old Poems III: Struggles
Our third entry into this run of old poetry from my youth is called Struggles. I wrote this one night, having not slept a wink and wrestling with the age old question of “What’s The Point?” Apparently I came up with this. For those just joining us, this series is a bunch of poems I wrote years ago, while I was young and just starting to recover from alcoholism. Please to enjoy.
STRUGGLES
There are days I struggle,
with my darker side.
Some days I have so much to juggle,
I’m swimming against the tide.
I want to be selfish,
care only for me.
Why should I give a damn?
No one else is, you see?
I want to be angry,
at the world at large.
Why must I preach Peace,
if Hate and War are in charge?
I want to be violent,
to strike against my foes;
to hurt them as they hurt me,
repay them for all my woes.
But for all my struggles,
my heart prevails.
I am soon reminded,
Love never fails.
I am human,
so I must err.
Forgive my weaknesses,
as they come to bear.
come all my darker feelings at length;
loving kindness shall be my strength.
