An obake is a type of Japanese yokai that is a shape-shifter, in this case it's Mr. Karakasa, the paper umbrella. Some people translate obake as ghost, but I felt I should stick with obake. Because obake, according to my research, are considered to be alive and aren't dead or undead like ghosts are, if that makes any since?

Issun-boushi, or Little One Inch is a Japanese fairy tail character, it's pretty similar to John Thumb if you've read it. Old couple doesn't have any kids, they magically get one, but he's the height of a finger etc, etc. One of the main differences between Issun-boushi and John Thumb, is that instead of being eaten by a wolf or giant, he's eaten by a red oni, or ogre. Also, Issun-boushi only gets spat out of the orgre's mouth, instead of cutting him in two like some versions of John Thumb depict with the wolf, which I assume is what the line refers to when it says the oni “bloomed” into two.
