Mmmm Serial Designation J
It's funny how a special epsiode for J though has told us everything some of us have been subtly considering for a long time now. To be frank, I always thought something was up with J in the first place, with the willingness to dedicate herself to the cause and the forward personality, it may be easy to get lost in the sauce but I'm glad theres so much more to her character than meets the eye. I suppose the biggest question to ask of a character who sides with a certain force, is why? Why dedicate yourself to a force whos the evil of the world and by far the most horrifying thing ever to exist and destroyed planets and society? The simple answer to that, is through a lot of breaking down and destroying of the psyche. I've always assumed that Cyn tortured J enough to the point she gave up and willingly submitted just so things would be easier yet if people are comfortable, its hard to break them. J in the manor may have been afraid of the mistress and the master yet at the end of the day, she had Tessa and while theres nothing obvious with their dynamic, its clear they are friends, judging by J's subtly worried and concered glances she gives to Tessa, let alone the fact that Tessa can obviously tell what J is thinking just by how her optics look its clear they had a bond.
What is fascinating though that could've been insighted more, is why did Cyn leave J to be in that situation? When she could've gotten rid of her and had her under control, yet she allowed her to roam and help tessa even though cyn told tessa to stay away from the gala. It felt like set up to something that went nowhere really. But I have to imagine that not only would've Cyn held Tessa's death over J immensely but would torture her over it, she could never exactly act perfectly like Tessa, but its perfect enough that J would probably willingly work with Cyn at just a bite of that opportunity. Lets also consider the fact that, even if J didn't want to work with Cyn, besides the torture stuff, what else would she really have? she'd have nothing because nobody exactly likes her, and nobody would, considering the whole murdering worker drones thing. If she works with cyn, she has something left, which is her team and the promise of safety, nor was she exactly given a chance to choose any other opportunity because nobody gave her that chance(let alone why would she accept it after getting murdered by the main cast) which the whole murdering and it being considered a joke is frustrating within itself but thats not what were talking about. There's nothing to fall back on, especially if this cycle has happened over and over again and nothings different, who knows how many times J has had to go through this and remembers it all, i've noticed also how cyn and j never say anything of substance to each other. Like they already understand what needs to happen and is going to happen, so the tragedy really just is in the fact that this has happened so many times that J believes it's the only way.
Like that's pretty depressing to think about. None of its really living. Its just kind of going through the motions. And yet, I would've still loved to see the two interact, do anything, or even say something of substance. As even if J is willing to work under these circumstances, its hard to believe that eventually it wouldn't just boil over. I am willing to bet though that a situation like that has happened already as well and was handled accordingly. It's like boggling at the sheer potential of all this, and yet, its these small moments. The small moments that were rarely ever shown in the show itself, character interactions, dynamics, moments to just breath and exist, without impending doom coming for you. Cause if you really think about it, what is J and Cyns dynamic besides J being a sidekick to Cyns scheme, without even putting her own two cents into it? Let alone the fact that Cyns scheme is just easily overrun which leaves a sour taste immensely. And the special episode literally showing all that potential was frustrating, because it could've been there, yet wasn't utilized! J was a bloody character!!
So what if Uzi and N are the main characters? if your going to have J and Cyn be villains, they deserve some perspective too. It could be as simple as just those two having a conversation or existing, the quiet and soft moments, that make it even more special. im just baffled this short did more for J's character then the show ever did, at least from where I see it. The way just 5 or 6 minutes can completely establish a character and their whole deal and or story yet also dedicate screentime to their perspective and show they matter is why slow moments matter. Because with those moments, we learn to care for the characters and see what they are dealing with, even if they aren't a main character, its nice to know what they are dealing with, and its ironic to, the character they wanted you to think was a punching bag and tried to kill off many times and or dismantle, might by possibly be one of the most interesting characters ever soley because of how much she was clearly despised. Do I like J as a jerk? Definitely, do I kin her more villianous side? Always, she is a meaningful character that deserves a lot of love and or care. But thats why we write fanfiction, because the canon itself can be a little strange sometimes, just wanted to say some thoughts tehehe!! Have some J drawings as well to the mix!
