16. Our muses want to take in the sights and sounds of a huge firework show

“I think we can just stay here. It looks like a great spot to watch the fireworks.” Junhee nodded absentmindedly. His words didn’t seem to reach her, distracted by the cherry blossoms and the ducks suddenly waddling on grass at the sight of another one. Sandeul quacked and decided to greet his new friends, turning around a few times to make sure that its owner was still nearby.

After spending the day at Hirosaki castle park, Seungri and Junhee found out that there will be a firework show in occasion of the cherry blossom festival. They’d circled the park countless times, crossing over the same red bridge and passing by the castle without taking much attention to it. The main attraction remained the cherry blossoms—and the ducks.

The soloist was more than pleased to spend some time in Japan with a friend and watched the full bloom of her favorite flowers. She didn’t mind how crowded the place was. They managed to find an area that wasn’t well known compared to the others. It was definitely an advantage for them to walk around, eating buns along the way.

As her attention remained on her beloved duck, Seungri nudged her arm on time for her to look up and see the first spark launch in the air and explode, instantaneously lighting up the sky with a precise design. Another followed and another, leading to the cacophony, which no one would complain. “Wah! So many!” She clapped enthusiastically, pointing at the ones going high in the sky, bigger and louder than the others as well.

Suddenly, a bump was felt at the tips of her flats. Junhee looked down and noticed an alarmed Sandeul that couldn’t quack louder than the fireworks. “Aww, are you scared?” She petted him reassuringly. “It’s okay. It’s almost over!”

Not really… It was far from being over. It barely started! With her scared pet duck snuggled close to her and her friend commenting about how well planned the show was, they kept watching it until the very end.

✦:My muse was attacked but yours saved them- how’ll my muse ever thank them?

Bloody scenes were recurrent in her memory despite how scarce they were. The blade was tainted with crimson red, droplets of blood dripping while the body fell on the ground. Junhee flinched as she saw the impact, as if she heard it loudly, but there was no sound. In fact, everything happened so rapidly that her assailant couldn’t yelp in terror. She couldn’t see his expression, but she knew a mere human wouldn’t stay calm at the sight of a girl materializing tonfas from her arms…

A hand pressed around her neck, the soloist heaved a shaking sigh. She had been threatened to follow, unable to grasp every word due to her heightened fear of being killed when a knife rested near her throat. Her legs were numb, keeping her glued to the grass—but she was forced to follow Boa until they got home.

Days passed by since the incident. No news related to it were released, which was odd, but she wouldn’t question about it. All she knew was that she couldn’t sleep without having the scenario repeated through her dreams, creating nightmares instead.

“I did not aim at vital organs nor do I have murderous intents.” A voice brought her back to reality while she was resting against the counter, a mug of rose milk tea in hands. She gradually looked up to see the mutant standing with Sandeul sleeping on the palm of her hands. “It was necessary, not avoidable. I apologize for my seemingly reckless behavior.”

What could she answer? Junhee knew the circumstances led Boa to use her powers. It was inevitable and her life was on the line. She was unconsciously avoiding her whenever possible. They were living in the same apartment, so one way or another; they were forced to meet each other quite often.

She just wanted the memory to fade away, but she would still see the blood drops on the other’s hands. Thankfully, the hallucinations linked to the aggression were gradually disappearing. She was able to stare at her without feeling threatened.

She knew Boa wouldn’t harm her. Despite being entirely aware of it, despite the countless times she told herself not to be afraid of her, she just couldn’t approach her like usual. It was hard to dissociate danger with her.

But here they were, facing one another, with no sign of distress shown upon the soloist’s face.

No words were exchanged. No interruption was made to disturb the quietness. Yet, the body language implied a stronger message than words. Boa remained still although her expression changed from composed to surprised, not expecting a tight embrace after days of being ignored.

Thank you. That was what she wanted to say. Thank you for saving me. Thank you for the fact that you came to my rescue without hesitation… Thank you, Unni. I love you. Those silent words echoed through the stillness of the air, the grip around the mutant’s waist tightened.

Thank you and I’m sorry… What will happen to you after this…?

12. Our muses want to go camping in a faraway forest

China Beach. Why was it even called that way when they were on Vancouver Island, Canada?

Once the car stabilized, Junhee hopped off with her backpack, still in the process of registering everything she had seen so far. Despite the few bumps they’d encountered earlier – and practically during the entire ride once they’d entered the narrow path in the woods –, her vigilance did not fail to capture the planked sign indicating the camp site’s name, for which she was fairly amused about.

She wanted to comment about it, but the idea was shunned the moment her eyes directed towards the waves and the sea foam hitting the shore from afar. The beach strewed with rocks at certain areas and wooden debris, surrounded by the woods mainly consisting of mature trees. She couldn’t really tell which species they were, but she knew they couldn’t be growing in South Korea as well.

“Ah,” she finally mumbled after remaining quiet, amazed by the sceneries so far. “So this is where we are going to camp…”

“Yes, and you better help me with everything before the sun sets.” The low-pitched voice startled her when a rolled paper hit her head lightly. Hands covering her forehead in defense, she jutted her lower lip and looked up at the tall figure. Amusement was subtly displayed on his features as Kris walked away, setting up the tents. “Hurry or the bears will greet you eventually for standing in the open like this!”

“B-b-b-bears!?” Her eyes widened as her voice rose abruptly. “Hey! You didn’t mention about the risks of meeting bears here!” She quickly followed him, looking rather frightened by the idea of meeting one. “Why have you chosen this campground if the chances of encountering bears are high?! I’m aware we are in the wilderness, but still! Don’t scare me!” A snicker was heard from the other as she kept whining, constantly looking around in case a big shadow would pass between the trees.

✬ — My muse conveys one of their wishes to you.

Her footsteps ended sharp, her eyes widening at the sight of the android seemingly sleeping—was it even acceptable to employ ‘sleep’ to a robot? Charging batteries shouldn’t be an element out of the ordinary for any electronic devices, but Junhee tends to forget that he wasn’t human.

Carefully, she placed the tray with biscuits and tea down, sitting across him. I wonder if he gets neck pain for sleeping like this… His head slightly dipping forward, his back resting against the wall, she wanted to readjust his posture, but she remembered that the chances of electrocution were high. Instead, she remained quiet; making sure her pets wouldn’t disturb the robot from recharging.

In silence, she contemplated him with fascination for a moment. Was there not a time when she wouldn’t be amazed over such matters? She had encountered humanoid beings before—and living with a mutant had definitely failed in decreasing her interest in them. Wasn’t it odd for a human to not fear them despite their heightened capabilities? Who knows when her life would be endangered by one of them if she keeps showing signs of naive hospitality?

Junhee gazed at Chanshik with a heavy heart. A lot of thoughts scrambled with the influence of a desire she tried to suppress at multiple occasions. Words clogged her throat, incapable of expressing her emotions earnestly. She did self-censure for the past months in order to cover most of her negativity. She did not lose hope in people—she lost faith in herself if that made sense.

Attachment became problematic as unfortunate events piled up. She wondered if it was wrong to give such an amount of affection that would definitely not be returned fully in the end. Yet, it did not stop her from meeting new people and befriend them with the same mindset she had prior to her fiancé’s death and the disappearance of close friends… and that hurt.

The risks of receiving pain rather than affection increased, and there were days when she would question about life being cruel and harsh and feelings being merciless and unstoppable. “What will it be if I wasn’t easily attached to people?” Junhee asked despite knowing she wouldn’t get any answer from the other. “Then again, I would be incapable of socializing, discussing with everyone so openly…” She sighed, petting her duck that was now curled up into a feathered ball, his eyes closed.

“What it feels like to be an android? Will it make things easier or will it be as complex as being human?” A light smile formed on her lips. She knew she wouldn’t get any answer from him. There was a double-edge comfort in knowing that he wouldn’t know. “I wish I wasn’t so blatantly attached to those who will eventually leave without warnings…”

6. Our muses go on a pilgrimage together

The Saint-Joseph’s Oratory of Mont-Royal was located on a mount. The sanctuary felt somehow intimidating from the bottom as it stood tall at the top, construction being made on the site to extend or maintain its condition and glorious holiness. A garden was beside it, explaining to story of Jesus with sculptures rather than words engraved in granite. A room reserved for prayers with candles was an absolute stop for tourists, including the souvenirs shop on the last floor of the basilica with a marvelous view of the city on the vast balcony. There was also a chapel located nearby, a second church and a museum located in the site. Everything just screamed holiness and religion as Junhee placed a hand above her squinted eyes.

As the sun reached its peak in the sky, it was almost unbearable to consider visiting the place without several water bottles in hand. She wasn’t sure why she was actually visiting it when it was located in Montreal, a small city with a few modest touristic sites. She and Soojung were fooling around at first, remembering how they associated the oratory to a place suitable for ‘Soojesus’—so how did they end up there?

At least, the garden at the bottom was nicely flourished with flowers, but they was one thing she would rather not do and that the other undeniably suggested at the site of pilgrims taking the stairs by climbing each step on their knees… “Wouldn’t it be more like a pilgrimage if we do the same? We did come with that kind of intention, right?” The soloist wasn’t sure if she was joking or not as her friend maintained a straight face, but she could perceive her lips quivering.

She grabbed the genie’s arm after readjusting her hat that kept flowing away due to the strong winds, dragging her gently. “Let’s just go like anyone else than the pilgrims—or we will never make it to the top.”

“Unni! Unni! Look!”

It was always a great thing to introduce the mutant to the wilderness… even if there were other chalets nearby with people partying and enjoying their time with friends and relatives. Junhee ran out of theirs with the mindset of appreciating nature’s beauty at night. Boa followed without reluctance, seemingly oblivious about what the other wanted to show her.

They were in the woods for all she knew. There wasn’t much to comment except for a detailed description of the scenery if she was permitted to do it. Stars enlightened the sky, accompanying the visible portion of the moon. The younger girl expressed excitement through her gestures, a grin plastered on her face.

“Stars! Unni! We can see the stars here unlike in town! It is so pretty!” She bounced beside the mutant once the other reached her. “Let’s try finding some constellations!” Boa remained silent for a moment, trying to comprehend how massive, luminous spheres of plasma held together by their own gravity could make her friend so jumpy. She wasn’t even sure if it was due to the stars or if she was the kind to be easily captivated by trivial entities. Perhaps a mixture of both would be correct.

“Self-luminous gaseous spheroidal celestial bodies of great mass which produce energy by means of nuclear fusion reactions… are they what you wanted to show me, Miss Juniel?” Boa observed the sky while the other childishly kept jumping. “If that is correct, we would be admiring a multitude of fixed luminous points due to their immense distance, asterisms for most, and constellations if we are knowledgeable of a few.”

She expected an answer, but none was heard for a few minutes. Her attention shifted to the only presence beside her, meeting wide open eyes. Junhee stood there without a word. It was a sight the mutant got used to as the human would always be amazed of her speech.

Boa’s hands reached for the other’s cheeks, poking them repeatedly until she got the usual reaction.

“Shall we proceed in the detection and identification of the constellations, Miss Juniel?”

38. Our muses are destined to time travel

"Are you serious?!" Juniel gasped as her eyes were still fixed on the necklace with the hourglass as the pendant. Her friend brought it along and babbled about it since, at first, she didn’t believe it would actually work. "Why would I lie to you?" Mina stared at the other, furrowing her eyebrows slightly. "I simply turned it a bit and it traveled back in time— only for an hour though."

Pick your poison: "I burnt my hand trying to roast chestnuts." ; "I think my teeth have frostbite." ; orrrrr "I'm going to be late, the roads are icy." Optional bonus round: Incorporate two in the same reaction.

Jongin holds his phone to his ear and listens to what Vartouhi has to say--she's supposed to be modelling for him again, but in winter clothing this time around, but apparently the winter weather's against them. He furrows his brows, swearing blindly that he can hear her teeth chatter as she makes a comment about them having frostbite. He can't help but snort at her statement. "It sure sounds like it," he says in response, switching his phone to his other ear. "The studio's heating is on, so it'll be well warm for you."

He feels bad about leaving her to make her own way here, but his van refused to start that morning--he chalks it up to the weather and rules picking her up out of the question. His gaze wanders to the clock mounted on the wall across from him and his brows arch, judging by the time it reads she should be here any minute now. However, to make sure, he decides to ask. "Hey, Touhi, when will you be here?"

The answer he gets informs him that she's going to be late due to the icy condition of the roads, and it's something he should've guessed on his own. It can't be helped but it does bring him back to his stupid van, sending another pang of guilt through him. "That's alright, then." He smiles to himself and hopes his voice sounds reassuring enough, he doesn't want her to feel rushed. "Take your time. Remember to be careful, yeah? I'll still be here."
