J.D.R a short story I started tonight
Jumping I feel the wind in my face and look down with nothing but smiles. Its that leap that I live for, and from there its all down hill. I pull the ripcord and brace for the sudden pull of the chute and nothing. Normally when jumping from a plane no big deal but with a base jump this is a real problem as every second counts. I don’t think you can ever be fully prepared for a chute not opening but I have practiced for this and with adrenaline spiking I pull the reserve chute and feel the familiar tug as it catch.
I did it! Jumping from the Transamerican Pyramid has been a dream for me ever since I saw my first article on base jumping. They said it could not be done but thats what makes it even better. As I float to the ground I spot the green van Jade rented for the day and balling up my chute as fast I can I run and jump in. “You did it!” Jade says giving me a high five and we are off.
At home I edit the footage from the three gopros I was using and upload the jump to a news group, it will be on youtube in minutes via some computer in Turkey, Russia, or hell maybe even New York City. Some contacts I made when starting extreme recordings suggest that I don’t upload myself and setup this system. I post to the channel channel and I guess some computer program picks it up and uploads. The main point is I am not uploading and so any revenue can not be tracked back to me. Once this hits the news channels it should get a few million hits, and well that kind of stuff can get me a grand or two once the posters take their cut.
Then within a minutes three or four more angles will get posted by the rest of my crew who where around town grabbing shots. Max has this killer HD camera that must have cost him twenty grand and he post the whole thing in in amazing 1080P for the world to see. They all go throughout our friends on the net and its a system that has worked well.
Having up loaded the video, I jump in the shower and head out for some food. I don’t eat before a stunt so I am starving! Sitting at Pluto’s I am loving the comments people are making on the youtube post. Theres comments about how its fake, or that its a dummy cause no one could jump from that low, and the best one is that I was hired by Godaddy because the user was presented with a Godaddy commercial when they watched.
Detective Mason sits at my table and as I look up the smile on his face makes me laugh. “I know it was you.”
“What was me?” I ask taking a drink of water.
“Come on J.D.R, who else in town could pull of a stunt like that and if they did how many of them would cover their face can keep quiet about it? You know as well as me that most people would be down doing a interview right now.”
“Yea and then they would be on their way downtown to face charges,” I respond.
“Want to know the best part, who every did this must have know that yearly maintenance was being done on the security monitoring system. There was a twenty minute window where nothing was recored. You wouldn’t know anyone who work for the company doing that maintenance would you?’
I just shrug and smile, “sounds like someone had some valuable info, I only wish it was me.” Getting up Mason says “good catching up with you again J.D.R, I am sure we will be talking soon.”
