What Could Have Been: J24 Canuck
I used J30 Riptide for Canuck’s dorsal fin because Riptide was/is the only male in the family who had an adult dorsal fin. He was drawn with a straight dorsal fin to show what his dorsal fin would have looked like outside of captivity had he lived long enough for it to sprout.
J24 Canuck 1970- December 1, 1974 J24 Canuck was son of J12 Sissy, brother of J14 Samish, and grandson of J2 Granny. He also was uncle of J23 Capricorn, J30 Riptide, J37 Hy'Shqa, J40 Suttles, J43, J45 Se-Yi-Chn, J49 T'ílem I'nges, and J55. He was captured in Carr Inlet, WA at the age of 2. He died in 1974 at the age of 4 from Candidiasis.
J24 Canuck had the misfortune of being born the year that orca captures started in Washington State. In 1972 he was captured along with 11-19 other whales (numbers vary depending on sources). He was stolen from his mother J12 Sissy and was sold to SeaWorld San Diego. Soon after being sold, he was sent to SeaWorld Aurora due to a lack of tank space. Not long after, he was moved again to SeaWorld Orlando where he died of Candidiasis during a show. His life should have been much longer in his home waters, but it was cut short due to human greed.
