On June 24, 1924, the Democratic National Convention opened at Madison Square Garden. It was destined to become the longest political convention in American history, before or since, closing on July 9 after 103 ballots. After a prolonged fight between the two front-runners, New York Governor Al Smith and William G. McAdoo, a son-in-law of former President Woodrow Wilson, the convention nominated dark horse John W. Davis. He went on to a crushing defeat at the hands of incumbent President Calvin Coolidge.
