The Eagle Collection - One-Eyed Jack by John Cooper. From Eagle No. 83, dated 22 October 1983. You can tell this was a later drawing of Jack as in his original 1976 run John drew his hair much neater. Looks like he needs to get to a barbers here. Treasury of British Comics.
One-Eyed Jack's NYPD police career comes to an end in Eagle No. 109, dated 21 April 1986 (a bit of a dark storyline that was a reprint from a 1976 issue of Valiant just before it merged with Battle Picture Weekly).
Jack does go rogue but only to take down (permanently) the criminal gang who his nephew had worked for. However at the end he doesn't get his job back.
Although Jack was popular, with Valiant merging with Battle a police story wasn't going to be the best fit. In the first merged issue though Jack's adventures continue with him being drafted into a secret organisation (the Military Intelligence Agency) by an old army buddy. The story continues until the strip was replaced by Dredger when Battle merged with Action in 1977. Newer readers then discovered his adventures in these reprints in Eagle 10 years later.
One-Eyed Jack McBane at work in the 94th Precinct in New York. Unlike the workplace of some other fictional cops (who get a fictional precinct) the 94th Precinct is a real part of the N.Y.P.D. (although not particularly close to Central Park and 110th Street). As Jack was able to solve most crimes within 3 pages he could cover the whole city.
The use of 110th Street may be a nod to the 1973 song Across 110th Street by Bobby Womack. Comics writers like to sneak in their song references.
Some New York comic book crime stats from 1976. The murders weren't as high as 2,000 per year at that time but did reach that in the early 1990's.
