Russ Meyer’s glamazon sexploitation fable, Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! – about a trio of thrill-seeking go-go dancers who take a young girl hostage and try to scam a misogynistic old man and his sons out of their money – feminized theaters on August 6, 1965.
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! premiered in Los Angeles on 6 August 1965.
According to director Russ Meyer, the film was a reworking of his previous film. 'We had just done a film called Motorpsycho, which was about three bad boys, and it had gone through the roof. So I said, 'Well, let's do one with three bad girls.”
Written in 4 days by Jack Moran, and filmed with a budget of $45,000 (about $370,000 in today’s value), the film was an unusual box office failure for Meyer.
Critically ignored (the few reviews it received were negative) at the time, the film’s reputation has improved with time, and is now frequently cited as not only one of the best B-movies ever made, but among the best American films. John Waters has called it, “beyond a doubt, the best movie ever made. It is possibly better than any film that will be made in the future.”
