@sothebys ・・・ Kick back and relax this weekend, with Jack B. Yeats’ sublimely poetic painting, ‘In Tir na N-óg’. The title refers to the legendary land of youth, a mythological island, believed to be off the west coast of Ireland, from Old Irish literature. It depicts a boy lying on a grassy bank, who glances away from the pages of his book towards the banks of a river, where an antiquated galleon marks the horizon line. His smiling expression conveys the pleasure of this moment, when he is caught between the sensual delights of nature on a summer’s day, and the imaginative stimulation of a storybook filled with great tales and adventures. _ When the painting was exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin in 1936, the year it was painted, a critic in the Evening Herald wrote: '... here we feel the essential Tir na nÓg, that dream world of loveliness and youth'. The work is returning to the @rhagallery for the first time in more than eighty years, as part of our pre-sale exhibition of Irish Art, where it will be on view, by appointment, from 27 to 30 August.
