1972 nyarán a Queen minden éjszaka és hajnalban az első lemezükön dolgozott. A dalokat Brian vagy Freddie írta, míg a hagyományosabb felépítésű dalok Brian munkáját dicsérték, addig Freddie számai különcök és szeszélyesebbek voltak. „Nincsenek szabályaim, amik alapján a dalokat írom. Eléggé ötletszerűen alkotok. Néhány dal gyorsabban születik meg. Sosem ülök le a zongora mellé, hogy „Na jó, akkor ideje megírni egy számot!”. Nem. Új dolgokkal próbálkozom, ötleteim támadnak, aztán neki állok. Nehéz elmagyarázni, de rengeteg különböző gondolat kering mindig a fejemben.” – magyarázta később Freddie. Freddie a dalszerzés mellett a banda logójának tervezésén és elkészítésén is dolgozott, hiszen úgy gondolta, hogy a Queennek kell egy embléma, ami teljes mértékben rájuk utal. Gyönyörű logót készített az együttesnek, ahol a négy tag csillagjegyét használta fel. A Q betű fölött egy főnix magasodott, az embléma pedig nem csak a tagokat jelképezte, hanem egyfajta fenséges hatást is keltett.
1972 szeptemberében az együttes végre aláírta a szerződést a Tridenttel, és heti 20 fontot kaptak fizetés címszó alatt, ami bár kevés volt, kénytelenek voltak elfogadni. A Trident továbbra is próbálta intézni a lemezszerződést és a terjesztést, de Jack Nelson továbbra sem járt sikerrel. Roger és John eközben befejezte a tanulmányait, Brian pedig ideiglenesen otthagyta az iskolát, hogy csak a Queenre koncentrálhasson. A négy bandatagnak tehát a Queen jelentette az egyetlen megélhetési forrást, de hiába álltak készen a felvételek, az együttessel továbbra sem történt semmi. „Freddievel minden nap bementünk a városba, és vertük az asztalt, hogy csináljon már valamit a cég, mert lejárt lemez lesz az albumunk.” – mesélte Brian. A Trident két koncertet szerevezett a Queennek, ahova meghívtak egy csomó fejest és lemezkiadó fejvadászt. Az első koncert 1972. november 6-án, a The Pheasantry Pubban került megrendezésre, azonban a hangosítással problémák adódtak, így a fellépés csúfos kudarc lett. A másik koncert, 1972. december 20-án, a londoni The Marqueeban volt. A közönségnek tetszett a koncert, több helyre is meghívták őket, ám továbbra sem kaptak szerződést.

In the summer of 1972 the Queen worked on their first album every night and at dawn. The songs were written by Brian or Freddie, while the more traditional songs praised Brian's work, Freddie's songs were eccentric and whimsical. “I have no rules by which I write songs. I’m quite imaginative. Some songs are made faster. I never sit down next to the piano saying, "Okay, then it's time to write a song!". No. I try new things, I get ideas, and then I do it. It's hard to explain, but there's always a lot of different thoughts in my head." - Freddie later explained. In addition to songwriting, Freddie also worked on designing and producing the band's logo, believing that Queen needed a logo that fully referred to them. He made a beautiful logo for the band, using the four members’ sign of the zodiac. Above the letter Q, a phoenix was raised, and the emblem not only symbolized the members, but also created a kind of royal effect.
In September 1972, the band finally signed a contract with Trident and received £ 20 a week under pay, which they were forced to accept. Trident continued trying to manage the record deal and distribution, but Jack Nelson still failed. Roger and John, meanwhile, finished their studies, and Brian temporarily left school to concentrate only on the Queen. So for the four band members, Queen was the only source of livelihood, but even though the recordings were ready, nothing happened to the band. "With Freddie, we went to town every day and beat the table to do something about the company because our album will be out of date." - Brian said. Trident has organized two concerts for Queens, where they invited a heads and a record label bounty hunter. The first concert took place on November 6, 1972, at The Pheasantry Pub, but there were problems with the sound, so the show was a bad luck. The other concert, December 20, 1972, was at The Marquee in London. The audience liked the concert, were invited to several venues them, but they still didn't get a contract.
