Gelato Lady
The gelato lady Of Richmond VA Stands Back curved by time Proud As extra large chocolate and peanut butter Cookies Call to me She smiles As I am overwhelmed by the Frozen Color wheel Of flavors I see the machine in the corner She was so proud When she told me about How it made gelato Before they opened The little ice cream shop chairs The traffic light Big and bold Hanging in the center of The shop It took years to open After The death of her son It was going to be his store Now Here she stands Here she stands Long past the point Where a retail job would Satisfy Here she stands Where every step Every movement Is for him Here she stands at 9 PM Proving to our Broken and sad hearts That we all Can find a reason To smile Here she stands Showing that all work Can satisfy If there is purpose inside us Here she stands Reminding us That with love And hope Anything is possible And also That gelato is damn good

Maggie Walker, born to former slave, made an impact for both African Americans and women. Walker became the first women to start a bank in 1903 and devoted her life to civil rights advancement, economic empowerment, and educational opportunities for Jim Crow-era African Americans and women. #blkrva #jXnward #jacksonward #richmondva #virginia #blackhistorymonth (at Jackson Ward) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ52pWPueaq/?utm_medium=tumblr
Jackson Ward “The Harlem of the South” In response to Jim Crow laws Black people of Richmond created their own banks, restaurants and other businesses because they weren’t allowed to go to whites only establishments. Virginians like Maggie L. Walker or Bill “Bojangles” Robinson along with other Black Virginians, were responsible for transforming Reconstruction-era Richmond into the birthplace for Black entrepreneurship. #blkrva #jXnward #jacksonward #richmondva #virginia #blackhistorymonth (at Jackson Ward) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ5Tb4oOW3a/?utm_medium=tumblr

Leigh St. Armory-Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia “In 1895, the City of Richmond constructed the magnificent Leigh Street Armory for its African American militia. During Reconstruction, Virginia led the nation in establishing black militia units, and Richmond was the only city to build an armory for that use. These volunteer soldiers drilled and trained there, and many joined other volunteers to serve in the Spanish-American War. In 1899, the Leigh Street Armory ceased to serve its original function and became first a school and ultimately the home of the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia” #blkrva #jXnward #jacksonward #richmondva #virginia #blackhistorymonth (at Black History Museum & Cultural Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ42fDdOib8/?utm_medium=tumblr
