Jacob Seisenegger: Carlos V
Archduchess Anna (1528-1590), Anna of Austria, Anna, Duchess of Bavaria, daughter of Emperor Ferdinand I - Jakob Seisenegger, 1545 Oil on canvas, 190 cm × 94.5 cm
The Archduchess wears a dress that corresponds to the German Renaissance fashion, which was only supplanted by the Spanish after the middle of the century. The appearance of those portrayed is mainly determined by the rich drape of the dress, the wide, puffy sleeves and the pleated skirt. The close-fitting hairstyle is covered by a hair net; a flat beret sits on it. Archduchess Anna was born in Prague in 1528 as the daughter of King Ferdinand I and his wife Anna of Hungary. In 1544 she was betrothed to Charles, Duke of Orléans, and in 1546 married to Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria. One of these two events could have been the reason for the creation of this portrait. The picture is by Jakob Seisenegger, who was Ferdinand I's court painter from 1531 and who painted numerous portraits of the family members. [x]
