Jacques Cartier’s First Encounter with Indigenous Peoples of Canada
On July 7, 1534, French explorer Jacques Cartier made his first recorded contact with the Indigenous peoples of what is now Canada during his first voyage across the Atlantic. While exploring the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Cartier encountered the Mi'kmaq people at Chaleur Bay in present-day New Brunswick, beginning a historic — and complex — chapter in the relationship between France and the Indigenous nations of North America.
The meeting involved trade and exchanges of goods, with Cartier and his crew receiving furs and other items while offering European goods in return. Although these early encounters were initially peaceful, they marked the beginning of increased European exploration, colonization, and profound changes for Indigenous communities across the continent.
Cartier Reaches Prince Edward Island: A New Chapter in North American Exploration
On June 29, 1534, French explorer Jacques Cartier became the first recorded European to reach Prince Edward Island during his first voyage to North America. Commissioned by King Francis I of France, Cartier was searching for a westward route to Asia and opportunities to expand French influence. Instead, he encountered the rich coastlines and Indigenous peoples of what is now Atlantic Canada, marking the beginning of France's long involvement in the region.
Cartier's exploration of Prince Edward Island revealed fertile landscapes, abundant wildlife, and strategic coastal waters. Although he did not establish a settlement, his detailed observations and maps encouraged future French expeditions and laid the foundation for New France. His 1534 voyage remains a significant milestone in Canadian history, opening the door to centuries of exploration, trade, and cultural exchange—while also beginning a complex relationship between European settlers and the Indigenous nations who had lived there for thousands of years.
A plaque from 1891 in Saint-Vincent Cathedral in Saint-Malo, France, proclaims that 16th century explorer Jacques Cartier received the blessing of the bishop of Saint-Malo on his departure for Canada on 16 May 1535.
The tomb of explorer Jacques Cartier (1491-1557) is inside Saint-Vincent Cathedral in Saint-Malo, France. Cartier was a native of Saint-Malo and the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and Saint Lawrence River in Canada.
