Either or really. Just depends on what you want to get it for. Some are really efficient at long range, others are close range, all are pretty deadly. and loud. really, really, loud.

Yeah but that's why they make different types and models. Some are safer for being around families and others are just what they are supposed to be, tools that can kill efficiently. Gotta know what you are looking for and what it is going to be around before purchasing one.

That thing in the back? That's a called a hammer. Pulling it back is sometimes called 'cocking' it. Single action revolvers require that you pull it (the hammer) back each time you want to fire, like in the old western films. On some revolvers, it's not necessary to pull the hammer back each time, like if it is a double action. It will automagically 'cock' the hammer and fire when you pull the trigger, meaning you won't have to physically pull the hammer back to fire each time.

Oh, it mean responsive to the lightest touch! Most triggers have a pull (how hard you have to pull the trigger) of I think 4-6 lbs. That's about average. Some are heavier (about 14 lbs for some!) others can be lighter (though I'd advise against using lighter weights, since it could cause accidental discharge). His was around the 4lb mark and didn't take much to let loose.

Let's see, I've owned a 91/30 Mosin Nagant bolt action rifle and currently own a Soviet semi-automatic SKS and a bolt action Marlin .22 magnum rifle. I personally prefer bolt action rifles. They just feel satisfying. Haha, your fear is not misplaced. I almost shot my foot off about a month ago when I was handling my friends modified AK-47. Thing had a hair trigger and fired at the lightest touch.
