Would have posted this earlier, but post limit.
Anywho, just a quick continuation of where a brief rp left off last night.
Slowly, he shook his head, the fingers of his free hand brushing against the older man's cheek.
"You don't need to thank me."
He faintly breathed the words, as the barely-there gap between them closed, lips finally brushing together.
Hisui had only meant for a brief, gentle kiss. But instead he felt a hand around his neck, pulling him in for more. He understood his companion's unspoken wish. Comfort, understanding. Things that only a select few could provide.
That was why he was wrapping an arm around his armored form, drawing him close against his chest. For all of his rough exterior and bravado, the distraught knight had no trouble melting it away.
Neither knew how many moments had passed, before finally their lips parted, though just enough to allow one another to breathe. Tilting his head ever-so-slightly, Hisui rested his forehead against Flynn's, a faint smirk crossing his features.
He almost spoke, but stopped himself. Instead, he settled for one more brief peck upon the knight's lips. Surely, Flynn already knew, that there was nowhere he would rather be.
"That doesn't change that you're being reckless. At least think about it before you go off and do something!"
"So what if I'm a bit reckless?! It ain't hurting anyone but me, anyway!"
"What about your sister?! How will she feel if anything happens to you?!"
"Kohak... she can handle herself!"
"That's not what I asked! Do you know what it's like, to lose someone important to you?!"
"I do dammit! That's why... that's why I have to protect Kohak."
"Think about it. Do you want her to go through the same think you did?"
"... I'll be careful, alright? Doesn't mean I'm gonna worry about the rules doing it."
"Gh... You're missing the point!"
"What point is that?!"
"It's thoughts like those that lead to my father's death! If the rules aren't obeyed, people get hurt!"
"What the-- what does your father have to do with this?!"
"That's--"
"C'mon, spill it!"
"..."
"Tch. That's it, I'm outta he--"
"I don't want to lose anyone else."
"Whaddya trying to say?"
"Please, just try to exercise some restraint. ...for Kohak, and for me."
"... jeez, c'mere."
"Hm? What are you..."
"--I don't know what happened to your dad, but I won't let anything happen to me, alright?"
"... you're warm. You know that?"
"Wha--cut it out, will ya? It's just the jacket."
Truth be told, he almost wondered why they kept agreeing to see one another. There were awkward pauses all the time, and heck, even Hisui knew he wasn't the easiest person to talk to. Even less so now... what with his constant want for a distraction and all.
Yet, Flynn always seemed so happy when he agreed to see him again. Part of him wondered if it was that smile that had him coming back for more.
Whatever the case, there they were, in another small cafe that Flynn magically knew about. Funny, he could have sworn he'd grown up around here, why was it he never knew about all these little places around?
They'd already eaten lunch, and now Hisui was sitting quietly, sipping at his coffee. Flynn on the other hand, was looking expectantly as the waiter came over with his dessert. Hisui hadn't paid attention to what it was exactly, but he could tell from his spot across the table that it was a pastry. It actually looked pretty plain from the outside.
So what was the big fuss about?
Lost in thought, he didn't even realize that his eyes were following the flaky dough as it was lifted from its plate. Not until it met with soft lips, making him start. Oh. How hadn't he noticed those before...?
Despite the brief mental scolding he gave himself for staring, he was at it again within seconds. Oh, and now there was some sort of cream coming out of this thing? Good god. Flynn was trying to ruin his mind with twisted thoughts, wasn't he?
Come to think of it... was this really the first time he'd tried to imagine Flynn's lips, around... --quickly, he shook his head. Stop it, Hisui! It's too soon for crap like that!
Of course, that was when Flynn looked up, noticing his companion seemed distressed over something. What he didn't realize, was a bit of white cream still gracing his lower lip. "Are you okay?"
"Huh?" Hisui blinked, looking up from his coffee, eyes darting to that speck of white. Good timing, too, because that was exactly when the blonde noticed it, and easily licked it away, making Hisui go red. "Y-yeah, I'm fine. Just gotta run to the restroom."
He didn't wait for a response before slipping off, leaving Flynn blinking, and a tiny bit confused. "What was that all about...?"
Hisui sat in silence, trying to ignore the fact that whatever Flynn was cooking actually smelled pretty good. Ever since trying his cooking some time ago, he had been avoiding eating it again.
Unfortunately, Flynn insisted that he should cook dinner tonight. Hisui hadn't managed to talk him out of it. Not this time. Apparently it still bothered the knight that he had actually said it was terrible before.
Tonight was supposed to rectify that.
He was pleasantly surprised when the meal was in front of him. It even looked presentable. More than that, even. Then why was he suddenly more worried for what it would taste like?
Looking up, Flynn was sitting across from him, looking expectant. How did a full-grown man manage to be that adorable? It was enough to bring a slight flush to Hisui's cheeks. He was quick to hide it, more or less, by looking back down to his plate.
Right. He could do this.
Slowly, he took a bite, doing his best to avoid a reflexive wince when the food hit his tongue. He actually impressed himself at his ability to keep a straight face while eating. Because, as expected, it wasn't very good. Not as bad as anticipated, but not good, either.
Flynn's voice piped up after that, nearly making him jump. "How is it?" There was that expectant look again. Dammit, how was he supposed to tell him the truth now?
"It's... wonderful." He forced a wide smile after swallowing, hoping that the blonde wouldn't see through his lie. He really didn't want to see that hurt face again. It didn't suit him. "Thanks."
Flynn brightened noticeably at the answer, finally digging into his own food. He could tell that Hisui was forcing it, but the thought still made him happy. Thank you, Hisui.
Unaware that his performance had been seen through, Hisui forced himself to finish the rest of the food, with that smile no less. That would make Flynn happy, right? He hoped so, anyway...
Afterward, Hisui set himself to doing the dishes. Part of his thanks for the meal, or something like that. He must have been more focused than he realized, because he didn't notice Flynn approaching. Not until there were arms around his waist, and a head against the back of his shoulder.
"Thank you. For giving me a chance."
Hisui flushed, slowly nodding his head. "O-of course. It was worth it."
Still sticking to your lie? You're too kind. Flynn smiled, holding him a little tighter.
After that night, Hisui still never let him cook again.
It seemed like whenever they had a spare moment, the knight found some way or another to touch him. Be it a pat on the shoulder, a kiss on the cheek, or whatever else he could think to do.
Hisui wasn't sure what to think about it, honestly. He liked the attention, and yet he was never sure how to respond to it, either.
Even now, in the privacy of the room they'd gotten for the night, things were no different. He sat on the floor, his back against the side of the bed while he flipped through a book he'd picked up earlier.
He paused, however, when he felt the bed shift behind him. When had Flynn gotten back? Damn, he hadn't realized how caught up he was with reading. Shrugging if off, his eyes were soon on the page again.
That is, until he felt more movement behind him. He didn't turn his head to look, though. He could already imagine those fingers toying with his hair well enough. He didn't even react, until warm breath brushed against his ear. That made him shudder involuntarily, eyes slipping closed.
"Flynn... wh-what're you..?"
"I'm saying hello." Came a calm response, and even with his eyes closed, Hisui could see the warm smile that probably came with it. Well, until the soft lips brushing against his ear turned into a warm tongue.
That was when he finally pulled his head away, cheeks red as he turned his head to look back. "Th-then just say hello!"
Flynn blinked, and might have been bothered, if he hadn't started to grow used to this sort of reaction. Instead, he just continued to smile, and looped his arms around Hisui's neck. "Relax. No one else can see us here."
"..." A soft sigh was the only response he got this time. That was Hisui reluctantly giving in. Without a word, he pressed his lips to the blonde's chin. "I'm trying..." Sometimes he wondered if Flynn really was as patient with him as he tried to seem.
The knight slowly nodded. He understood, even if it was a bit disheartening sometimes. "I know." That didn't stop him from tightening his grip, though. He didn't want to let him go yet, not if he didn't have to.
Hisui slowly relaxed in his grip, letting himself smile, if only faintly. Right, there was no reason to be so defensive here. Slowly, he lifted a hand to the other man's cheek, and found himself chewing the inside of his lip, considering. He may have thought on it a little too long, but eventually, he let his lips find Flynn's, lingering for just a moment before he pulled back again.
Why can't I just say it...? But you already understand, don't you?
He had gone on more walks into the forest than usual, too. Before it was mostly just to hunt. Now it felt like every chance he could find, he would take.
When she asked, he dismissed her concerns, claiming he was fine. She never bought it for a moment, though. She knew her big brother better than that. Besides, no one said they were fine and meant it, when they had such a sad expression lingering in their eyes.
She let the issue drop after that. Until one evening, when they were stuck indoors thanks to a snowstorm. No one would be going outside that evening.
After coming downstairs, she found Hisui sitting in one of the windows, staring out into the snow. Sighing softly, she stepped into the kitchen, long enough to make two cups of hot chocolate.
Returning, she set one aside for herself, before carefully stepping closer to her older brother. "Here... I thought you might like some." She smiled softly, even more so when he turned and took the warm mug from her hand.
She watched as he sipped at it, trying to decide if she should try bringing it up again. She knew what was bothering him. Had always known. But she wasn't sure how to approach it.
"Say... what do you think Flynn would be doing, if he were here?"
Hisui froze as soon as the name left her lips. He nearly sputtered out his drink, even. Dammit Kohak, why would you ask something like that?
Sighing, he lowered the mug from his lips. "He'd be curled up in my coat or something, trying to keep warm." His sister didn't miss the note of warmth in those words. She couldn't explain it, but she could feel it all the same.
"You miss him... don't you?" A stupid question, she knew. But someone had to ask it.
"--of course I do!" Hisui snapped, more harshly than he meant to.
In return, Kohak brought a hand across his cheek, making him blink. "Then why did you come back? You knew this would happen!"
Hisui took in a slow breath. Dammit. "It's better this way... we weren't supposed to meet in the first place."
"You don't know that."
"Sure I do. People from different worlds weren't meant to meet." So why did we?
Kohak huffed, turning to sit down and quietly sip at her hot chocolate.
That silence only lasted so long, however.
"I wish you would have stayed. I hate seeing you like this."
Hisui found himself letting out a silent sigh. "I hate it, too."
Hisui sighed quietly to himself as his footsteps finally came to a stop. It felt so strange, being back home. Even the snow-covered forest he had once been accustomed to now felt foreign.
He had just reached a spring, where the Fruelle Spirits still roamed, even after all this time. Before he might have paused to admire their beauty. But now, all he could think about was the empty feeling left in his chest. The biting cold of the breeze rustling through the trees did nothing to help, either. If anything, it made for a more pointed reminder.
Closing his eyes was almost more painful. That was when he saw that warm smile. The smile that had drawn him in to begin with. He knew it already, he would never forget that smile, even if he'd wanted to.
He did his best to ignore the feel of a stray tear trailing down his cheek. He was stronger than this! He wasn't supposed to be some lovesick brat!
Yet, he couldn't help it. Just thinking back on the knight; his voice, his smile, everything... just knowing that he wouldn't be able to hear or see them again made him ache inside.
The worst part? He didn't want those memories to fade. Didn't want the pain to go away. Not if it meant letting go of all that time they had spent together. Even if those sweet embraces were only a memory, it was better than forgetting they had happened at all.
Though feeling as he did now, it made him wonder. Should they have even met to begin with? After all, they were from completely different worlds. Their meeting was only a fluke, right? Now that they were back in their respective homes, he wasn't sure what to think. It almost felt like a dream.
Except that dreams had never hurt this badly before.
Letting out a heavy sigh, he turned his gaze up to the sky above. Surely, Flynn wasn't thinking these things. He was probably too busy with his work. That thought was comforting, in a way. Perhaps it would be better, if he were simply forgotten. Maybe the knight could be spared some of this heartache.
Yet I wonder... are you looking up at a similar sky?
Even if it was something so simple. He half-hoped that they could still have that much in common. Anything that could keep them connected. That thought had him suddenly gripping his sleeve. If only he had thought to give him his jacket, if only for safekeeping.
Or would it only make things worse, to have a tangible reminder of what they had shared?
"Dammit, get out of my head!" He found himself punching a nearby tree, frustrated. Why did this all have to be so confusing!?
All he wanted, was some peace.
Or, perhaps one more moment with him. Just long enough to tell him one more time...
"I love you."
