I think sam's essays would have to include some form of lying with the truth because anyone looking at sam's childhood from the outside, even without knowing all of the details, would probably wonder how he not only managed such an impressive GPA but is even graduating at all.
and sam wanted to get out, and he viewed college as his out, so I don't think any detail about his life (minus the supernatural part) would be off limits to write about. he'd talk about the struggles of having lost a parent, of the constant moving around for his dad's "work," and might even tell a story about how a "hunting incident" left him practically bedridden for a time.
things like that!
