Artist Collective Work

Jalan Emas Project using collective artist approach. The project itself compiled from the works of individual artists involved. This approach was taken in order to avoid a single perspective on the theme. This would enable further discussion and open discourse at the various level of society.

Yennu Ariendra (Director, Composer)

Yennu Ariendra is one of the initiators of this project. Since 2005, he’s been working as music composer for contemporary performances, both in Indonesia and abroad. The use of digital media and found object (common object) are major elements in the creation of his musical works.

Asa Rahmana (Co-Director, Writer)

Asa Rahmana is a singer-songwriter, performer, writer, and multi-discipline artist. She initiated this project along with with Yennu Ariendra, her bandmate in Belkastrelka where she acts as artistic director and singer-songwriter. She is also one of the founding members of XXLabs, a collective of female artist which concerning their works on new media art and feminine issues.

Erson Padapiran (Composer and Musician)

Erson Padapiran, studied at faculty of law Janabadra University Yogyakarta, learned to play trumpet on university marching band. He play trumpet with Kirana Bigband, Belkastrelka, and Jay & Gatrawardaya, colaborated with visual artist jompet kuswidanarto on his artwork at 2010 and having project with 16th notes man my own brass quintet this year

Irene Agrivine (Visual Artist, Artistic Director)

Open systems advocate, technologist, artist and educator Irene Agrivina is a graduate of the Graphic Design faculty at the Indonesia Institute of Art (ISI), Yogyakarta. She is one of the founding members and current directors of HONF, the Yogyakarta based new media and technology laboratory.

Atinna Rizqiana (Costume Designer, Visual Artist)

Atinna Rizqiana is the owner and creative director for Draoupads, a women's clothing line. She is working as costume designer in some of performance, visual art and movie project. Her works including costumes in some of Papermoon Puppet Theater performances, Sardono W Kusumo’s ‘Ratu Kalinyamat, and a work in progress feature length film, titled Another Trip to The Moon.

M.N. Qomaruddin (Choreographer, Actor)

Qomaruddin is an actor. Beside involved in a lot of contemporary theater performances, he is now the coordinator of the Teater Garasi’s Studio Creator that responsible for maintaining the activities of young artists in the Teater Garasi’s laboratory.

Vassia Valkanioti (Choreographer, Actor)

With bachelor studies both in management and theater in Greece, Vassia Valkanioti came to integrate the two with an Erasmus Mundus Master in Int. Humanitarian Action -specification in how to embed art in post-disaster settings- (association of universities in Netherlands, Belgium, Indonesia). In Yogyakarta, she is a graduate of one-year scholarship program in Dance faculty of the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI), as well as the Actor Studio of Teater Garasi.

The Power Of Persuasion

In the business of hope, people usually use an interesting approach. They take advantage of the prevailing norms in society to legitimize what they offer. For example, a speaker-businessman named Yusuf Mansur (Indonesian Islamic Preacher) invites his congregations to invest their money in his business, without any legal agreement, and clear explanations, only with double profits interest and guarantees go to heaven (that promises by God) after they die.

Persuasion that performed with perfect technique and well planned, can make people amazed and just accept that persuasion. Such persuasion, arranged very carefully, considering many psychological aspects and methods from various theories of persuasion. One example of a widely used method is the use of consensus, as mentioned Robert Cialdini in his book 'Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion '. Persuasion that using norms is an example of the use of consensus.

In the presentation of “Jalan Emas The Game”, we explored the methods of persuasion to influence the audience, so they are willing to participate and completely immersed into it. Persuasion performances include various aspects, not merely verbal, but also the conditioning of audience, including space, sound, lighting, objects, and rules.

Requestioning The Irrationality

I heard the story about the father of my friend, he tried to consult a Dukun (shaman) because his stall did not sell. He believes there is a supernatural force that makes his stall bankrupt. In fact, in the city at the time, convenience stores began to bloom. I do not understand why he did not see this fact. Is it because his educational background? or experience? Sometime leaders candidate go to the shaman to be able to win the election. Are they not educated person? Of course the are. I have experienced loss of a valuable object, I suspect it was stolen. I should have contacted the police, but instead i went to a shaman in that time. I feel stupid, but how can I explain my thoughts? 

What is irrationality, then? Does intelligence make someone immune to irrational thought? Sometimes it based on internal defense mechanisms we develop to mitigate personal anger in an attempt to avoid facing the truth about ourselves or our immediate circumstances. 

In our research, based on finacial dream and prosperity, we found the fact that might be laughable for others, things that do not make sense, but it is a common thing in our society. Some people are willing to sacrifice their loved ones or believe an object can make him become more prosperous.

In the opening scene of Jalan Emas The Game, we tried to show some of this irrational object and treat it as an art object. Caption text adapted from the stories of pesugihan* that exist in society.

*pesugihan is the traditional way to become rich, including rituals or ceremonies that accompanying it during the process. There is a so-called gate keeper or shaman, as a ritual guide. Someone who wants the rich should sacrifice something valuable in his life in order the wishes come true.
