I spend a small portion of my life chasing all the Georges and all the Dragons and Princesses, I swear. Bear with me. I’ll explain what I mean in a moment. Casually leaning on the wall in the lot at the corner of Dudley Street and #Harrison Avenue, along the north-facing wall of #Jalloh African market, I found one of my newest favorite pieces of #Boston #streetart. Yet, I do not know the creator. And so, the piece which I could not look at without wearing a constant grin as my cartoonish imagination cranked up to a solid 9 on it’s dial, ascends to the catalogue of “elusive art” that is always on low simmer, bubbling in a back corner of my mind. The piece has a sense of humor yet a clear sense of defiance. One thing most non-#illustrator folks may not realize is just how difficult it is to draw #cartoonish figures at a large scale; the curvy lines and simplified shapes often lose something as they scale upwards. It’s just something about simplicity; perception changes with scale. The fact that the figures and masks and fishies all evoke a liveliness and charm at this scale make it a new fave of mine. Each panel hints at deeper stories.
Each figure suggests a heritage that is overlooked.
Each design implies a subversive slyness that just makes me start to giggle even as I write about it.
I am truly a fool.
I am glad it “psst’ed” at the corner of my eye as I biked past the historic #HibernianHall. It’s sly. It knows it’s clever. Chill vibe with a virtuous agenda, it leans on the wall opposite the Zion Fire Holiness Church Of God. It knows it’s power, but wields it calmly, comically, and even mysteriously. One of first pieces of #art I was obsessed with for longer than a hot minute was George and The #Dragon. Before the internet, finding out about a random painting wasn’t as easy. I chased it until I came across it in Belgium in 2019, as randomly and unexpectedly as I stumbled across this one. I don’t know the name of this piece, or the artist.
And so now I will devote it to memory, hoping to chase it’s mystery.
Another George. Another Dragon. Just off Harrison and Dudley. ▫️ #mural #bostonart #roxbury #muralsforthemovement #streettheory #akaXN #TheRealXN (at Hibernian Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CIimVv7jfKs/?igshid=c0kbc84f4t5r
