"Abbe's remarkable career began at the advent of portrait photography, silent films, and photojournalism in Virginia and New York, continuing in Hollywood and Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. In the 1940s he transitioned to radio and television, first as a commentator in Portland and San Francisco, and later as a TV critic for the Oakland Tribune. His photography has been celebrated in Europe and the US with major retrospectives at the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Chrysler Museum in Virginia, and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany."
