Autism, mental illness, mentally challenged, these are things that are looked upon positively in today’s society. Few times must we consider some of the dark and dreaded places that may exist in the psyche of these minds. A terror can be unleashed that may develop in the depths of a way of thought we may never understand. That my friends may produce a killer, and there so happens to be one of this nature in the jaw dropping short from Jerry Pyle, Service. The film follows a mother who has brought her child with her to the house she must clean. What she doesn’t know is there is killer in the house.
Upon watching the film you immediately see the quality of Pyle’s expertise. When covering a ton of horror films you can tell quite early when the director has an eye for horror. Angles, frames, and the use of space all work well in Service and sets up the focus of the short nicely.
Service has three amazing stars who really shine a light on the work of Pyle with their spectacular performances. James Babson is a scholar of the arts and its no wonder his imdb page is filled to the brim. He captures the role of the killer flawlessly and gives the audience sympathy even though he is a sadistic deviant. The mother is played by the yummy and talented Denna Thomsen who does a fantastic job showing off true scream queen talents that should propel her into the industry. After viewers see Service they will anxiously anticipate her as a lead in another horror. Not to be overshadowed is the portrayal of the daughter Annie by Rylie Martinez. Whose subtle and innocent nature soon provided a shock at the films climax. Look out for this future star in anything she wants to do as we are sure we will see more of her in the future.
All packaged together Service is a short that truly maximizes it worth and provides an entertaining piece of film making any horror fan would enjoy. Service is an home invasion with lungs of a slasher. That’s the foundation of any good invader film and Service is at the top of the list. HorrorHound Weekend provided a great amount of films to see this year and we are all thankful for Service!
**We would like to personally thank Jerry for giving us this film after the showing to review. Sorry to see Service not get the pub it should have due to a programming error at the fest.
