Lian had seen some articles and posts about a gang in the area she had taken it upon herself, without permission from her mom, to keep an eye on them.

John saw Rice trying to go inside the gest room. Lian had gone out, and James was alone, so he thought it was a good excuse to try and talk to the kid, maybe keep him company if he wanted to. John knocked.
Hey kid... Rice wants to come inside, can I open the door for her?

James thought about it, he'd been hearing Rice scratch at the door for a bit "mhm" he replied just loud enough to be heard.
James was glad Lian had gone out but did miss her none the less. He was curled up in bed when John opened the door. He didn't look at John when he came in but watches Rice as she comes up to the bed.
