San Ysidro McDonald’s Massacre
The San Ysidro McDonald’s Massacre occurred at a McDonald’s in the town San Ysidro of San Diego,CA on July 19, 1984. The perpetrator was 41 year old James Huberty, who fatally shot 21 people and wounded 19 others before being killed by police.
His wife, Etna, asked where he was going with a small arsenal of weapons and he replied with “I’m going to hunt humans.” He had been at that same Mcdonald’s with his wife and children earlier that day before the massacre. James walked into the Mcdonald’s with a semiautomatic rifle, a semiautomatic pistol and a 12-gauge pump shotgun. He told his family, “Goodbye, I won’t be back”.
On that day 45 people were in that Mcdonald’s. He then started killing and wounding many others inside and outside of the San Ysidro Mcdonald’s. Police then interfered and 27 yr old police SWAT sniper named Charles Foster sniped James and killed him instantly. Huberty shouted things about fighting in the Vietnam War but was never actually part of the military.
A permanent memorial to those killed in the massacre was unveiled on December 13, 1990. The victims were:

Stated less explicitly than the counterpart found in James Huberty 15 years later, 26-year-old Johnny Lee Thomas’ plans for the evening of September 29, 1969 also involved hunting his fellow man. Thomas, sharing a home in Dallas, Texas with his half-brother and aunt, had warned her for weeks that “something” was going to happen, and one day came home with a 20-gauge shotgun. That night, he left his dinner unfinished at the table and headed towards the door with the gun in hand. Concerned, his aunt asked him what he was going to do, and he responded, “I’m going hunting - all by myself.”
Thomas stepped onto the porch and immediately fired at his neighbors, who were out front playing records. A 16-year-old girl was wounded in the face. He reloaded, then shot her grandmother before the woman was able to pull both of them to safety. Thomas’ aunt stormed outside and attempted to wrestle the gun away from him, but he threatened to kill her if she intervened again. He moved near the sidewalk, where a retaining wall hid him from view of the street. Forty-year-old Frank Buford was fatally shot, as he staggered by the gunman, inebriated from a night of drinking. Three other passersby were shot and injured before police arrived. Yelling, “Here I am, mother fucker!” he opened fire on responding officers. In the gun battle that ensued, four policemen and a news reporter were wounded, and Thomas lay dead from being shot 32 times.
