Ep 114 – From Here to Eternity – Hawaii, Pearl Harbor, and the Peacetime Army

From Here to Eternity won eight Academy Awards in 1954, including Best Picture. It stars Montgomery Clift, Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed, and Frank Sinatra, who wanted the role so badly that he paid for his own screen test and took a pay cut to appear in it. It's based on James Jones's debut novel, an 800-something page portrait of the American peacetime army in Hawaii in the months before Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.

Jones was stationed at Schofield Barracks during the attack, and much of what's in the book comes directly from his experience. The US Army, when the film was being made, had a few notes. They didn't want anyone to know that soldiers were beaten in the stockade. They didn't want a sex worker as a character. They didn't want Captain Holmes to be promoted despite being a terrible CO, which is exactly what happens in the book. The director said the Holmes ending looked like a recruitment film. 

We also talk about the women of wartime Hawaii, who were not just sitting around being army wives. The Women's Air Raid Defense ran radar tracking operations twenty-four hours a day. Pretty kickass.

After Amanda and Kenny Lee, I finished making another coloured pencil and poster painting this evening. These two are Sarah and James Jones from Fireman Sam, twin niece and nephew of Firefighter Sam Jones and the children of Charlie and Bronwyn Jones, and I also painted them two separate backgrounds in pink and sky blue colour.

1. When do you think they’ll discover their powers after touching the crystals (Don’t worry I got one for my oc Mari Cridlington. When she was practicing her magic magician tricks not knowing she’s using magician magic)

2. Since that the pioneers are crystal gems what powers you think they’ll have and what fusions

1. Norman falls into the ocean and thinks he's gonna drown, when he realizes he's fine, he feels gills on his neck, Sarah discovered her powers when she was blowing bubbles, the bubbles were ice, James discovered his when his arm got stuck and he tried to pull it out, only for it to stretch, Derek discovered his powers, in his room when his favorite toy almost fell out of the window, Mandy discovered her's when she thinks about turning invisible, when she did, her dad Mike jump when he saw her right behind him suddenly, Hannah discovered her's when she was helping her dad, she sees she's able to lift things with her mind, Peter was reading his book about dinosaurs (a gift from Arnold if you know that episode of season 16) he hears his sister's thoughts, he looks up to see she was adjusting her helicopter but her mouth was closed (again, nobody knows they have powers but themselves)

2. Hard to say, it's been awhile since I last watched Steven universe, so I'm not sure yet, when you show me what their gems are

His name is Henry, he’s the same age as Sarah and James, Annie Morris’s little brother, and Penny’s cousin

Either voiced by Pablo (Pablo) or Eddie (Ready Eddie go)

He has a interest in animals
