The King Center mourns the passing of Rev. James Lawson Jr., a leading nonviolent strategist and tactician whose insight was deeply valued by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Rev. Lawson, who died at 95, profoundly shaped the Civil Rights Movement, training leaders like John Lewis and Diane Nash. His legacy of nonviolent activism continues to inspire us. Our condolences to his family and all touched by his work.

Reject meaningless fellowship not rooted in Christian acceptance, dialogue, and mission

Pastor James Lawson, 1968 to Methodists on desegregation: 

“[W]e reject tokenism. We refuse to tolerate a cheap, meaningless fellowship not rooted in Christian acceptance, dialogue and mission. We will settle for nothing less than a church where the love of Christ rules and where a man is a man not by race, or blood, but by the will and power of God.”

In very simple adjustments, this quote and advocacy for social justice in the church in 1968 makes me think about it as a parallel for calls for social justice in the church now: 

“[W]e reject tokenism. We refuse to tolerate a cheap, meaningless fellowship not rooted in Christian acceptance, dialogue and mission. We will settle for nothing less than a church where the love of Christ rules and where a [person and child of God] is a [person and child of God] not by race, or blood, [or sexuality, or gender,] but by the will and power of God”.
