The Gambler was released on 2 October 1974.
James Toback began writing a semi-autobiographical novel about his gambling addiction but decided to turn it into a screenplay instead. In 1972 he was introduced to Robert De Niro and gave him a copy of the script, hoping De Niro (who was mostly unknown at the time) would star in it.
After Toback sold the script, director Karl Reisz (making his first US film) was hired and Reisz did not want De Niro and cast James Caan in the lead (Caan was fresh off his Academy Award nomination as Best Supporting Actor for 1972's The Godfather).
The film received mostly positive reviews, especially Caan, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.
A remake was announced in 2011, which Toback criticized and had no involvement in the production. The remake (directed by Rupert Wyatt and starring Mark Wahlberg) was released in December 2014 and received mostly negative reviews (although Jessica Lange's performance received praise).
