Synopsis
From one of the UK's biggest crime writers - the man brought you the bestselling Inspector McLean novels - comes a phenomenal new series guaranteed to have your heart in your mouth.
Undercover ops are always dangerous, but DC Constance Fairchild never expected things to go this wrong.
Returning to their base of operations, an anonymous office in a shabby neighbourhood, she finds the bloodied body of her boss, and friend, DI Pete Copperthwaite. He's been executed - a single shot to the head.
In the aftermath, it seems someone in the Met is determined to make sure that blame for the wrecked operation falls squarely on Con's shoulders. She is cut loose and cast out, angry and alone with her grief... right until the moment someone also tries to put a bullet through her head.
There's no place to hide, and no time to cry.
Review
This is the 1st book in a new series featuring DC Constance (Con) Fairchild and actually my first time reading a James Oswald novel and I'm super excited to continue reading more by him this book was completely non-stop and did not disappoint. I won't go into to much detail as the synopsis already tells you everything you need to know but man did this book start with a bang! Right away you're totally invested in the story (at least I was ) Con is suffering a terrible loss and before she's even able to grieve she realises someone is setting her up to take the fall. I really felt for Con she's completely isolated from her co-workers i wanted to call them team but honestly team is too strong a word she's never really jelled well with any of them but I think the fact she had Pete sort of made that fine with her and now with Pete gone everyone setting there sights on blaming her for his death.
Con as a character as well was just fantastic, she's amazingly fierce and totally ready to fight for what is right, completely loved her willingness to battle with the enemy, which in this book was pretty much everyone. I also absolutely loved that Con spoke to Pete throughout the novel, really came to love him in this and I hope throughout the series there will be more from him. If you're looking for a fast paced thriller that keeps you on the edge, is full on cat and mouse type of chase then this is definitely one to check out! Highly likeable characters that I cannot wait to read about again. Thank you so much to Anne Cater at Random Things Tours for asking me to take part in the blog tour and to the publisher for sending me a copy of the book to review.
