Today, we are remembering Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968), and reflecting on his teachings for nonviolent and peaceful protest to fight for racial equality and social justice during the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.

More than twenty years before the start of the civil rights movement, James Van Der Zee photographed Marcus Garvey marching at a Universal Negro Improvement Association convention in 1924 in Harlem, New York City.

James Van Der Zee was an African-American photographer active during the Harlem Renaissance. He photographed people in his Harlem studio, capturing the pride of those in his own neighborhood  and celebrating black culture. Van Der Zee was born on June 29, 1886 in Lenox, Massachusetts before moving to New York around 1909. He worked as a darkroom clerk at a small department store for many years, before opening his own studio in Harlem.
