Favorite Webcomic Rec List
I'm going to pretend that this is belatedly in honor of National Comic Book Day (shh it was in September, I know). Or I just read too many webcomics. Or I'm bored and procrastinating. So, here are my favorite LGBTQIA+ webcomics!
Sharp Zero by Robotsharks (no regular update schedule)
tumblr
Our story centers around Elliot, a delinquent indie rock musician who gets caught up in the world of vigilantism through an unexpectedly stupid accident.
This story is fantastic, and definitely my top suggestion. The amount of representation of ALL different kinds of people is staggering and the story line is enthralling. If you like your traditional superhero comic, then check this one out. It has all of the best features of a good superhero comic and it has one of the most diverse casts I have ever seen. The side characters are just as interesting as the main characters. Also, some Spiderman-esque hero origins. Also superheroes. What more can you ask for?
Autophobia by G.H.S.T. (updates on Sundays @ 11a.m. EST)
tumblr | Tapastic
(Autophobia: the fear of being alone) Autophobia is a coming-of-age story about a teenage boy that chronicles his life and self-discovery through his late teenage years. It’ll touch on themes like sexuality, friendship, love, substance abuse, and mental illness.
***If you find depictions of anxiety to be triggering, then this one isn't for you.*** I identify so strongly with Louis and the depictions of anxiety resonate with me. G.H.S.T. does a fantastic job of visualizing it. That being said, it is sometimes a little too strong, so I suggest an exercise of caution on this one. On a brighter note, this one is also absolutely adorable. The art is fantastic and Louis and Daniel are incredibly awkward.
Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu (currently on hiatus until December, but updates every other month with multiple updates-- meaning the author posts entire "episodes" or chapters at once, then goes on hiatus for a month or so. She's fantastic about updates though.)

Eric Bittle—former Georgia junior figure skating champion, vlogger extraordinaire, and amateur pâtissier—is starting his freshman year playing hockey at the prestigious Samwell University in Samwell, Massachusetts. And it’s basically nothing like co-ed club hockey back in the South. For one?
There’s checking.
It’s a story about hockey and friendship and bros and trying to find yourself during the best 4 years of your life.
Okay, so I know very little about hockey. But currently? I'm obsessed. The author really knows what she's doing-- she's got an incredibly interesting and unique cast of characters (I really hope Ransom and Holster stick around for "Hockey Shit With Ransom & Holster). Also, they all go by Hockey nicknames, so you have like, Bitty and Holster and Chowder and Lardo and so on, and then you have Shitty. And then there's Jack. This one hosts a fun cast, a cute slice of life story, and lots of pie and Southern charm.
Rock and Riot by cheriiart aka Chelsey Furedi (updates on Tuesday and Friday mornings UTC)
tumblr | Tapastic
Rock and Riot follows the tales of opposing teenage gangs in the 1950s with an LGBTQ theme! Will the teams set aside their differences to fight for what they have in common?
Alright, this one has probably the cutest art style of them all. It's also probably the most diverse comic on this list, after Sharp Zero. Of course, it is set in the 50's, which is not historically the most accepting period in U.S. history, and while it has caused a few minor problems for the main characters, this aspect is largely ignored in the narrative (thus far*). Mostly, it is pretty art, coming-of-age, and comedic drama. A++++ recommend if 50's aesthetic and lighthearted Greaser turf wars are your thing. ***The first five chapters are now available for purchase in print if you really want to support the author!***
Jamie by NDGO (updates on Fridays @ 2p.m. PST)
tumblr | Tapastic
New friendships and experiences blossom when Jamie, a young hopeless romantic, bumps into Aiden, a socially inept pretty boy (with his own set of problems) in this coming of age story with themes of: Identity, peer pressure, heartbreak, sacrifice and the difficult journey to self acceptance.
A good number of the comics on this list are coming-of-age stories. This one is delightfully innocent and sweet, focusing on Jamie and his sister and their friends as he attempts to awkwardly flirt with pretty boy Aiden. Jamie is rather similar to Check, Please! in terms of atmosphere and characters, though it's somewhat purer in a way.
There are more really good comics and artists as well, such as The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal, Obsidian Heart, and Chaos Life to name a few, but for the sake of time and space, these are just a few of my favorites.
Happy reading!
