For those of you who are not familiar with the film or musical Heathers, that is what the web series is based on. In the originals, J.D. was a guy - Jason Dean - and also hit many of the marks of a sociopath. (See his profile here. Also has spoilers from the film.) Jane Dean is not much different in this modernized version of the story.

J.D. first appears in the fourth episode of the series and she appears as an aloof loner and comes across as very charismatic to Veronica. It’s certainly enough to win here heart (Even if she doesn’t initially admit that J.D. is her girlfriend). However, one of her first actions noted in the series is bringing a gun to school and firing it off to scare the resident jerkish jocks, Kurt and Ram. It was loaded with blanks but the fact that she brought it at all was rather bold.
However, as the story unfolds, we scratch underneath the surface and see that the lonely girl with the tough exterior is really a disturbed psycho with an outwardly acceptable exterior. Veronica first starts noticing this when J.D. tricks her into poisoning Heather Chandler. J.D. keeps talking about it like it was thrilling. After getting her to help kill two other people and framing it as suicide, it seriously starts to disturb Veronica as to how much enjoyment J.D. gets out of this.
She starts looking more and more manipulative of Veronica, but in her own distorted way, she is the only living person J.D. cares about. Though that didn’t stop her from wanting to kill her as well for trying to get in the way of the plans she has for Westerberg - wiping out the entire school. It says something about her impulse control when her first response to any wrongs committed against her or Veronica is murder.
“I loved you, Veronica! I mean, I’m still gonna kill you but MAN, OH MAN am I gonna feel bad about it!”
Her rant in part two of episode twelve reveals that her mother killed herself when she was younger. And it clearly has an effect on J.D.’s mentality growing up as she becomes a vengeful serial killer with a very distorted view of love. However, after all Veronica has been through by the end of the story, she never became as bad as J.D. So it really says more about Jane when her mother commits suicide and she nose dives off the deep end yet Veronica had unwittingly become an accomplice to murder when she didn’t want blood on her hands and nearly lost her best friend from birth to suicide and she takes a more optimistic tone at the end of everything.
And when Veronica gives her the silent treatment, J.D. becomes more and more agitated with frequent bursts of anger every twenty seconds. Even vowing to kill everything she loves. By the end of that episode, Veronica fakes a suicide and notes that one of the reasons she’s doing it is J.D.’s murderous plans and manipulations. And yet, she refuses to believe she had anything to do with it despite having the fact thrown in her face by Veronica herself.
