Our featured Article for this week is Kista by Jane Land.

Published in 1986, this novel length Star Trek zine focused on the Spock/Chapel pairing, who are kidnapped by Orion slave traders; cut off from the Enterprise they must find a way to survive. It is well known for its positive portrayal of Christine Chapel, showing her to be smart and resilient. This characterization of Chapel was fairly rare in Trek fandom at the time.

You’re not a real Daria fan unless you’re gay for at least ONE of the characters

There’s this thing in oldschool Star Trek fanfic (like self-published zine oldschool Star Trek) where the authors who wrote about female characters came up with fancanon  as to why women were still so sexualized and marginalized in the show, when it was supposed to be taking place in this idyllic future. I’m thinking of Jane Land’s work in particular, where the justification for 60s style sexism was that at some point in the history of the Star Trek universe there was a complete subversion of feminism because of reproductive health laws, where the right wing campaigns against abortion and stem cell research fully succeeded.  Jane Land’s Demeter is kind of like Sherri Tepper’s Grass or Katherine V. Forrest’s Daughters of a Coral Dawn (all female, or female-centric, planet). It was written in 1986, around the time of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. I feel like 30 years later the prospect of such an inversion happening should feel less likely but at the same time, I wouldn’t be surprised by a future where gender relations had migrated back to something like 60s Star Trek. Maybe I’m paranoid and pessimistic.

Jane Land is the kind of fanfic author I would love to hear speak and/or be interviewed. What was the process of writing fanfic as a zine? How did you receive feedback? Has there been any shifts in feminist tropes since writing Kista? etc etc.
