Did you know that in the mid-19th century, one of Japan’s most successful artists was gender-nonconforming painter Okuhara Seiko?
In 1865, Seiko arrived in Tokyo and held a ‘coming out’ party, which debuted not only their artistic career, but also their new gender-neutral name – Seiko – which they would use for the rest of their life.
In 1891, Seiko retired to the village of Kamikawakami with their lifetime companion, the female artist Watanabe Seiran.
