Thirty minutes into study hall, Castiel Novak turned in his seat and hit another student over the head with the Norton Anthology of Western Literature, Ninth Edition, Volume 1. He was subsequently sent to detention. 

Castiel's protestations fell on deaf ears, despite plentiful evidence against the other sophomore, namely a bright orange post-it scrawled with the words "will suck dick for pancakes" stuck to the back of his sweater. He stood sulkily and made a big show of leaving the room. Detention was for losers. People who got high in the lavatories during lunch, cursed at teachers, and vandalized school property. Castiel did not belong there. He entered the room and handed his detention slip to Mr. Adler, who grunted and remained engrossed in his copy of Sports Illustrated. The only free desk was between two seniors Castiel recognized as friends of his older brother. Troublemakers. They sneered as he slid into the seat. 

The air was stale and cold, fluorescent lights harsh against Castiel’s eyes in this windowless room. A fly buzzed around until someone squashed it against their desk. Mr. Adler fell asleep after about twenty minutes, emitting thunderous snores every few moments. The delinquents sitting on either side of Castiel snuck out of the room, snickering quietly. When detention was over, everyone filed one by one into the hallway and dispersed. Mr. Adler’s snooze continued. 

On the other side of the hall, leaned up against the lockers, was Dean Winchester, with a smug expression on his face. Castiel strode up and kicked him in the shin. 

“Ow! Fucking hell,” Dean dropped the folder he was holding and clutched his leg. Castiel looked down. It was his English folder. 

“Why do you have my stuff?” Castiel growled, tempted to kick the other shin. Dean glared at him. 

“You left it in study hall, douchebag.” 

“I’m the douchebag? You were the one harassing me,” Castiel bent to retrieve his folder, surprised at how close Dean was when he stood upright. The other boy had taken a step away from the lockers. That smug look was back on his face. Castiel obviously hadn’t kicked him hard enough. 

“What, you didn’t like my love note? Guess I’ll have to give them some work. Check your folder.” He gave one last debonair smile before sauntering down the hallway and disappearing around a corner. Castiel scowled after him, only looking down at his folder when Dean was out of sight. He opened it and shuffled through the papers, giving them all a once over to make sure everything was in order. He paused at the reading list. Beside every line had been scrawled a few words, all the way down the page. 

Commentary. Beside Antigone Dean had written “sad as hell, lots of death, read oedipus first.” Beside Fahrenheit 451 he’d written “won’t be able to put it down.” Beside The House on Mango Street was “shit gets real but it’s so fucking good.” And on and on. At the end of the sheet was an orange post-it note. 

“will suck dick for burgers (preferably on a friday night)”

Castiel blushed.
