Starco IS NOT Dead
After today’s episode, I’ve been noticing a lot of people saying “Starco is dead.” Or “Jarko is going to be endgame.” Trust me, Starco is far from being dead. We still have a whole other season to go. (Maybe even a 4th) If you haven’t noticed, Daron likes fooling us. Starco is still going strong. It may seem dead, but it’s not. Just wait until Marco finds out about Star’s crush on him. Besides, us Starco shippers aren’t going down without a fight. :)
A couple more quick thoughts
Collateral Damage - Great fun! I love Janna so this one had me from the get-go. The humor was non-stop hit after hit. And surprise! Mr. Candle is still working at the school? Hilarious, and even more so on a meta level since it's so obvious that they decided to have him still working as guidance councilor purely for the purposes of a silly joke. Marco had surprisingly little role, and poor Ferguson and Alfonso are literally hidden in the background. So much meta humor! And Brittney Wong is always fun.
And yet even with all the silly humor, I can't help but headcanon Starco and one-sided Janco. I mean, Janna says that she's messed up too. Star then explains that it's because she lost her family's spell book (which fits in with the theme of the episode). But I headcanon that Janna was thinking it was about Marco and Jackie when she said she was also messed up.
Just Friends - This is what I'm here for. Okay, so it seems that Marco has NOT been dating Jackie unseen all this time. I'm guessing they've been hanging out here and there at school, but sweet self conscious Marco Diaz has been too worried Jackie will realize he's uncool to really ask her out. (Clearly, Hot Marco reverted entirely to his 14 year old personality when he returned to Earth-time. I mean, I could tell from his reaction to the bald spot, but still.)
And I did not expect Star to be the one to get this date together. Clearly, she's still unfamiliar with a lot of Earth things, so she had no idea that this concert would be a "kissing" thing. But Jackie doesn't know Star doesn't know that, so she would have taken Star coming along as absolute proof that Star was just friends with Marco. Marco, of course, is so stressed and mentally confused that he doesn't think it through.
And Jackie continues to be completely sweet and caring of Marco. The other girls love to tease Marco because he’s so fun to mess with. But Jackie sees how sensitive Marco is to embarrassment so she instantly cuts him off before he embarrasses himself and supportively spins it as something sweet. I don’t think Jackie was purposefully joshing with Marco - I think she just doesn’t “get” how much really weird stuff Marco has been through that apologizing to ducks would seem like an entirely plausible thing to do. Speaking of which - that’s what makes that moment the most hilarious joke of the episode.
This episode marks integration of the music with the story. It's catchy and it's memorable and it's emotionally moving. I mean, there's this stress because Star is obviously singing along with double meaning, but Marco is ... ??? How oblivious is he? Does he really completely not know? And does he really only feel friendship for Star? (In my emotional experience - probably yes, it's only friendship for Marco. When you're really that in love with someone, you just don't see others that way. Usually. But then, Star is unusually perfect for him...)
In Just Friends, silly jokes take a back seat to romantic tension, but the tension of multiple meaning layers has something of a similar mental stress as silly humor. There's a sort of tension when you have see Star say one thing in one tone while her face expression animation and context tell something else. And then when context alone tells you that she's holding a fake facial expression even though no one is looking. There's a lot of this at the end of Bon Bon also. I love it! It makes you really feel for Star, and Marco, and even Jackie. It hurts so good.
