Tribe Tuesdays...on a Wednesday lol.
I'm so sorry I forgot to post this yesterday.
Anywho, here goes your ATCQ fix!! Shout out to De La Soul on the chorus.
Tribe Tuesdays in full effect!!!
So, if you read my last Tribe post, then you know that by the time I was introduced to Tribe they were at the end of their run. However that didn't stop me from diving head first into the Tribe catalog. I eventually found "Midnight Marauders" as a result of hearing this song. This isn't my favorite Tribe song (we'll get to that down the road) but the sample is undeniably great.
Funny tidbit: when I first heard this I wasn't too clear on what they were talking about lol. I was a little wet behind the ears. Especially's Phife's verse. Whoa buddy lol.....
One thing to know about this Detroit Girl in a New York World: I'm a huge Tribe Called Quest fan. I own pretty much every album, anthologies and solo albums included. Tribe is the group that really made me fall in love with Hip Hop. Granted by the time I learned about Tribe they were pretty much at the end, their classic lyrics and smooth beats won me over and will live forever.
So in honor of Tribe, I've decided to have Tribe Tuesdays every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month. So to kick it off, today I'll be showcasing the first Tribe song I remember hearing.
The Love Movement came out in 1998, my sophomore year in high school. I had been brought up on R&B and Jazz but dibbled and dabbled in Hip-Hop. However, when I heard this song on the radio (only once at that) it immediately caught my ear. It was something about the smoothness of the track, and how Tip's and Phife's voices beautifully contradict each other. I was hooked. "Find My Way" was the perfect song to introduce me to Tribe and truly help me find my way to Hip-Hop. Enjoy!!
Side note: This was also technically my first introduction to Jay Dee (a.k.a. J Dilla) but I wouldn't realize that until my senior year of high school when I learned about Slum Village...but that's another post. :-)
