Review: Jarryd Prain 'The Hanky Code', Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Jarryd Prain dives elbow-deep into The Hanky Code, with room for plenty of laughs and a tonne of queer fun this MICF.
A bear with a hanky walks into a bar – just joking, Jarryd Prain (2023 RAW Comedy National Finalist) is much more than that,
The beauty of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is that I can head out for a post work drink and end up laughing my ass off.
That is exactly what happened this Tuesday when I popped into Grouse and on Tuesday night.
It was one of those cold Melbourne days, and I needed a laugh, and I happened to see Jarryd Prain.
Who happened to be previewing his show at Grouse that night in Room 7, the venue’s performance space.
What I need from a great stand-up is pretty simple: make me laugh and take me on a journey.
But what makes a great stand-up is someone who draws from their own life experience and sets up jokes like you’re sitting on the couch chatting.
That is the power of Jarryd Prain; he’s unapologetically himself, and he has fun taking us on a ride.
That is not easy on the opening night of a show in a new town.
Especially when your subject matter for a show is very gay, and your audience may not be.
But there’s no harm in Jarryd going in dry, he knows how to lube us up.
Turning jokes on their head and on himself!
Diving into the history of queer coded flagging with The Hanky Code, this is more than Jarryd Prain taking us on a history lesson.
He opens up the door to laugh about sex, sexuality and yourself with charm and sparkle.
He doesn’t create a divide between the queer and nonqueer people in the room who may already be up to speed on the hanky code.
But instead he turns the jokes on their head and on himself.
Peeking behind the curtain and diving into his bedroom drawer, but it’s not about airing dirty laundry.
There’s a gold mine of comedy when it comes to the hanky code and plenty of obvious avenues Jarryd’s stand-up could go.
But it doesn’t.
I think that’s what I loved so much about this show.
Jarryd isn’t afraid to turn the spotlight on himself and make you laugh through his own shenanigans and sharp wit.
Talking about sex should be fun, even if it can be a little uncomfortable.
And there is something not only brave, but inspiring about Jarryd’s take in The Hanky Code.
I honestly loved his approach to a topic that many queer people already know about, or have at least heard of.
The minute you learn something new, he has something in his back pocket to surprise you and keep you on your toes.
Can’t help but get swept up.
The hardest thing about writing a review for stand-up is not giving anything away.
Needless to say, when you go and see The Hanky Code, and you should go and see it, don’t be afraid of where (and what colour) you sit on.
Queer people who want a laugh at ourselves and our lives, go see this show.
And if you don’t fit in that arena, guess what, the show is still for you.
There is an indelible charm to Jarryd’s stand-up, with a reliability that you can’t help but get swept up in and have fun with.
So whether you top, bottom, flag or flounce, get along to Grouse and give The Hanky Code a viewing this Comedy Festival.
You won’t just laugh, you may also learn something.
Jarryd Prain’s The Hanky Code runs from 9th – 20th April at Grouse in Fitzroy this Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
