EPISODES 6 /7 August: We Say Goodbye Legendary Bad-Ass Jasmine Cooper, Phoenix Is A Jerk, Plus Some Dirty Charades
Sorry these are a bit late. I’ve been a bit busy at work on night shifts, so have combined the two together – partly out of time, partly out of the fact that not really much happens in the first episode. It’s one of those ones where all they’re doing is finishing up and setting up.
Muzza’s been a bit of a silly old bastard with the should I let her stay or should she go act. We all know he’ll come around eventually, (of course only with help with the old man). Jasmine’s farewell goes down in typical Cooper fashion – lame and predictable. Evan cues it up with a lame-o joke, everyone gets over-emotional, and Jasmine has to leave with smug parting words of wisdom. I thought it would bother me more that so much of the episode revolved around her – but I guess she deserves a bit of credit for serving us up some great storylines.
Let’s pay tribute to Jasmine Cooper, the archetypal nerdy girl who wore glasses and loved the library. She got some of the best storylines after Brooke... Temporarily dying from a root, ghost hunting, an awful attempt at being “bad” (signified by her clothing suddently having studs on it), rooting Jared, rooting Ula’s would-be-rapist for booze, partying with Dayna, unfortunate styles, stealing a dead woman’s hair, attending a women’s empowerment course (worst), being an all-round nerd, SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE, that weirdo fake-Christian-phase*, sexing up a would-be Colombian priest exchange student, getting “engaged”, destroying a motorbike, being bullied by Ula and being cheated on by Phoenix in a barn with a volleyball-playing farm girl. I'm sure I've missed stuff. Anyway, with her exit, we can add facilitator to the world cringeyest pact.
Oh shit and I nearly forgot the “geek-chic” modeling.
I can’t figure out what was my favourite Jasmine part, there are just far too many!!
*I have nothing against Christians or their beliefs - just against Jasmine Cooper.
Intercut into Episode: Goodbye To Jasmine is Henry moving in with Vasa and Roimata (finally seeing them two do something not selfish), Muz and his dad decide to get on just like that, Toby proves to be smarter than even Emma and Phoenix proves himself to be even more of a shit than before. Geez, take the kid on a nice family trip to somewhere amazing like Paris and ruin him for everyone else.
By the start of the next episode, the writers have obviously realized they need someone to take on their smug kid act. Phoenix has no understanding of what art is – without it, his dad would just be some rich doctor who sleeps with lots of women far too attractive for him!
Warner stylez. Harry gets it.
Phoneix wants to create something meaningful – unfortunately, what his art means is he is really, really unoriginal, because he goes for public statement of Generation Y’s voice in the internet culture of today bs. At first I thought, sucks to be you, but apparently the kids of Shortland Street are as clueless as Phoenix and think its great. Why does that not surprise me?
I THOUGHT THIS WAS GENERALLY SUPPOSED TO BE A HOSPITAL DRAMA.
It annoys me that they keep referencing Banksy – with Exit Through The Gift Shop being one of my favourite films, I’m offended they genuinely make Banksy out to be a sellout?– Banksy’s success is a reflection on the people who made him popular, ironically, being the people he was targeting. It's hardly being a sellout if your mockery of them is the point. Then again, subtlety and irony really aren’t things Shorty “gets”.
Bella and Josh look like they’re going to get something going. I love it. They seem to bring out the best in each other and it’s nice to see Bella getting something else other than mopey and sad about Dr Durville. Bella is best when she is flustered – laughing at a sad widow just doesn’t feel right. Not even on Shortland Street. :(
Vinnie and Daallaass decide an appropriate channel for their celibacy is homebrew. Fair enough, except that homebrew usually tastes like shit. I sure hope this starts going the way of Dukes of Hazzard!!! Art really seems to be a theme today, because even moonshinin’ “is an art” according to Daallaass.
I think I can see why his celibacy is involuntary.
Favourite part: Josh’s double thumbs up at Bella, and if you screenshot it, his gestures look dirty -giggle-
Finally Phoenix gets arrested for vandalism. Dumb shit thinks art is all about breaking the rules for the sake of it. If his art is so great and needs to be seen regardless, PICK A PUBLIC WALL YOU LEGALLY HAVE THE RIGHTS TO POSTER ON.
AUGUST 1 EPISODE: Brooke Keeps It Fresh (By Being A Bitch), Harper Seduces Everyone With Her New York Ways
Rachel obviously hates herself enough to go to dinner with only the 4 most self-centered people in her age group (herself included). She convinces Dr Harper Whitley, big time NY ER doctor who's slumming it in Ferndale, to come too. Drama ensues.
Jasmine decides after finding her way home she is ready to go on the exchange to Colombia. I assumed she meant hey, I’m such a weak bitch because I went foetal under a tree at the dairy after being missing for a few hours, I need to toughen the shit up. Nope, apparently, that experience qualifies as a successful life lesson where she overcame obstacles – “He challenged me to step up, and I did… I had to rely on myself to get home”. Preeeeetty sure your daddy drove you home and your mummy hugged you with a blanket.
I'M SO GROWN UP GUYS I DON'T EVEN HAVE GLASSES ANYMORE
Thankfully, Wendy states the actual obvious – “I understand you think this is a good idea. But how many other good ideas have you had lately?” LOL tell it like it is Wendz.
Jasmine manages to convince her in the end, and then Murray successfully unconvinces her. Nice conviction. Fantastic parenting. Why can’t you just let her go? We could finally be rid of some of the best/worst storylines featuring the show’s worst character. Bring back Seth!!!
Kylie keeps trying to make everyone like her again, but it doesn’t work, cause she's like, kind of a bitch. Evan, like a gutless weenie, just kind of accepts her half-assed apology.
Dr Harper Whitley, fancy big time ER doctor gets all the guys because she is soooo cool because she lived in New York guys, didn’t you know. She’s also ready good at drinking and they have this actually cringeworthy whisky tasting where she shows how knowledgable she is.
Apparently going to NY and being rich makes you really good at knowing good piss.
Brooke gets all jealous and has a big drunken rant where she alientates everyone, calls Chris a manslut and Dr Harper Whitley a maneater. To be fair, she also calls Rachel out on being a boring dinner date, which she totes is.
Personally, I enjoyed seeing that, because Dr Harper Whitley seems to only move between a smug “New York attitude” and being condescending to Josh about being a drug dealer’s bum boy. She also talks with her eyes shut way too much, I especially enjoyed her story about the bar in Brooklyn where these two old men would play piano, that was sooooo cool, thanks Dr Harper Whitley for teaching me about what its like outside of NZ!!
NEXT TIME ON SHORTLAND STREET: Wendz takes Kylie down a peg with a dressing down in the corridor. We've all seen how that gingerness in her gets her all fiery and mother-lion when she did it to Dayna, hope this one is better..
BEST QUOTE OF THE EPISODE
"As Harry would say, "we got owwwwned." - Dr Chris Warner.
JULY 30 EPISODE - The Coopers Are Slightly But Well-Intentioned Racist, Evan Continues To Embarass Himself
Previously on Shortland Street…. Evan proves he is still too immature to be in an adult relationship but following whats called the “twilight approach to dating": smothering=love. Kylie proves she is a bit shit at this whole “make him hate me" game by getting the clingy boyfriend talking about marriage and bebes. srsly?
I’ve got to say, I was hoping for Jasmine to really go off the rails with the whole rebellious-Dayna thing - sadly the writers must have realised she was irritating and shipped her off to bipolarland. Off topic, also disappointed we never met Jennifer (who I really envisioned being the amazeballs Jennifer Ward-Lealand). Instead, they replace the more realistic bad influence and age-appropriate friend with demented grandad who encourages her to go batshit too. At first I was like the fuckkkkkk? but now I am realllllly enjoying it….
Jasmine tries to convince her batshit Muzza Sr that she is wild and rebellious because she ate “an interesting capsicum". He encourages her to take it a step further and go really wild, i.e. eat some Chinese food.
PSYCHED
Jasmine and MS ignorantly eat their delish looking Chinese food, expecting it to be “pigs armpit" and give them “the squirtz", but are way too surprised to find it tastes good. MS also speaks to the waiter like he is impaired. I love how Shorty appears to play on the racist stereotype of Asian food being weird and unrecognisable, but really is using it to highlight the racial stereotype of Pakeha being ignorant. Very sneaky, writers.
I got excited thinking MS was sliding back into his incest-molesting ways when he suggests Jaz becomes a lesbian, but it just proved to be a poor attempt at him being encouraging., get her to get out and see and experience the world. Don’t you think Jasmine has been through enough – she became a ghost hunter, nearly died from Phoeniz rooting her, rooted a few more guys, and survived that awful glasses/fringe combo? Sorry, forgot that was “geek-chic”.
Just when I thought that it was getting mushy and motivational, Muzza SR spins the whole thing around and speeds off in the car, leaving Jaz in a shady part of Ferndale with no phone, no info and little money.
HA. Classic shorty. He says it is so she can live and have an adventure, but secretly I think he is just fucking hilarious and he knows it.
Otherwise, ever clueless Murray can’t figure out why his son is such a spaz and freaks out at being asked to work a shift at the place he works. Evan’s also too dumb to notice her breaking up with him, and Emma manages to talk him into thinking she wants to be with him for reals. Maybe she can’t stand the fact that he never blinks?
Boyd, the only likable character, actual practises some medicine this episode by doing some surgery or some shit on an old lady. it ends up going shaky at first coz there are soooo many problems but he pulls through - does Shortland Street ever see surgery that goes fine? Makes you wonder how they keep telling themselves they’re the top hospital in all of Ferndale when ever medical procedure has some dramatic hiccup.
This experience gets Kylie and Vinnie hook up in the elevator, saucy minxes, but I think we all saw that coming.
Next time on Shortland Street… The Coopers deal with the terrifying situation of a 17-year-old girl having to catch a bus home without her cell phone. Only on NZ’s number one drama.
