TRIED AND TESTED IN TIMES OF CHAOS
Via Jason McCarthy
I do my best to stay away from the (political) hate, there’s no hope in that and it doesn’t help anyone who needs it. But I’ve gotten enough forwards and seen enough venom in the last couple days about everything from energy independence to vaccination justice to a softer military — all pointing to some sort of validation of our nation’s demise — if you tune in too much, you’ll swear it never stops. But it needs to.
It’s not to say we’re perfect. No matter your beliefs, we have a hard road ahead. Embrace it — ours has always been the harder path. But the more important message is to say that the struggle begins from within. And then it stays close to home, with those we love and those we break bread with, our communities. If you want to complain about everything all the time, these actions are part of the problem. Change your ways.
Here’s a brief how-to, call it a life hack tried and tested in times of chaos. You need to take care of yourself so that you can take care of and inspire others, better. For me, that means add a little weight to the ruck in the morning and toss some sandbags around till the brain clears up. This has nothing to do with a thumb work-out, nothing to do with staring at a screen, or yelling at some bot on some thread that found me. Let it go.
Move heavy stuff till you get more optimistic. Then share that tale far and wide. The good news is, you’ll feel better, too.
Monday Love
Via Jason McCarthy
If you hate what you do, and this goes on for too long, change your life. I’m not talking about a bad day or a bad week — we all have those. I’m saying, if you permanently dread Mondays, you do actually have options. First is, show up to work in such a state that you have to take a shower or at a minimum that you learn the art of the baby wipe wipe down. Everything is better without the fuzz in your brain, and only physical exhaustion cures it — we all know this about our dogs and our kids, let’s remember it for ourselves. My life hack is a 4 mile ruck to work, with Monster. By the time I get to @goruck, I have a short list of things I’m really excited to get to work on today.
Another option - fake it till you make it. Pretend you do love your job, change your attitude. Try to make the others around you better instead of lamenting your lot in life. Self-pity is toxic for all, and most of all for you. Optimism and a good attitude are self-fulfilling prophecies — the thing is, you have to keep the faith because they will be tested.
The last option is, if you hate your life for too long, change up the scenery. Find a new job, pursue a new dream, do something different. If it entails less money, ask yourself what you really value in life. If it entails more money, make sure it’s not a trap to get you to forsake a life you do love for someone else’s version of your path.
Your path is your path. You get to choose. So choose wisely.
