“I still think this is a little over the top.”
Patty smiles at him, neon green lipstick smeared onto her front teeth. “With all due respect, my job is one of the only jobs that DOESNT hinge on what you think. “
Jasper tilts his head to the side. “Alright. I’ll give ya that. I’m just saying “
She ushers him into another room, down another hall. There’s nothing about Labrynth that makes sense. Jasper quit trying to figure out the pay out years ago. He’s pretty sure that Patty might be the only person out there to not need a map to get through it.
Her heels clack against the pale white marble floor leaving little light sparks with each touch of the heel. “And it’s noted. Noted, notarized, and not adjusted for. You’re traveling all the way to Kinsborough. You’re going to need a guide.”
“I never use a guide.”
“This time is different and you know it. Jasper, I like you. Out of everyone I work with, I might even hate you the least. Don’t make me reevaluate that today, alright?”
Jasper heaves out a sigh. “Fine. I just -“
“And we’re here!” Patty says, loudly. She stops outside of a door. It’s a plain gray door like any other plan gray door in the building. There’s not even a number on it. She adjusts the set of her cat eye glasses. “Now, I’m going to warn you now, he’s a bit of a character. You’re ALSO a character. It should work out.”
Jasper sputters. “How am I a character?”
Patty gives him a dry look. Then she turns and opens the door, stepping inside. “Jasper Crow, meet your new Guide. Tomas.”
The man in question unfurls himself from an uncomfortable looking chair. He’s wearing a brown pin striped suit, perfectly tailored, and dark marks under his eyes so vibrant they might as well be paint. “Pleased to meet you.”
His accent is thick. Jasper holds out a hand. “Tomas?”
“Just Tomas,” he stresses, eyeing Jasper’s hand. A moment passes. Two of them. Tomas takes it and gives a limp, half assed hand shake.
Patty says, “I’m sure you boys will get along brilliantly.”

“Nicht. That will not work,” says Tomas, peeking over the map that’s spread out on the table.
Jasper says, “pretty sure it will work. See? Kinsborough, right there at the end of our track.”
“Nicht,” says Tomas again. “It will not.”
Smoothly, Patty intervenes, “we can change it.”
“We will have too,” says Tomas. “I will make the adjustments.”
He gathers up the map and a pen and moves to the entire other side of the room. Jasper turns to Patty, tells her, “really?”
“He’s the best we have,” she says.
Jasper tells her, “now that’s just sad.
Give him a chance, Jasper. Getting these blueprints to Kinsborough is the most important thing you’ve ever done.
And here I thought that was making them.
Making them was the SECOND most important thing you’ve done.
Jasper snorts. “Right.”
“I’m being serious, Jasper. If you aren’t able to make the delivery.” Patty purses her lips together, glances away from him. “It might be best if you just don’t come back.”
