No Bucket List Needed; Only Being Outside (Petrified Forest National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While standing at a parking area pullout and overlook for the Jasper Forest and looking to the west across badlands and eroded formations in this part of Petrified Forest National Park. One can see the scattered fragments of petrified wood all over this landscape between the overlook and more distant badlands formations. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Jasper Forest by James Marvin Phelps Via Flickr: Jasper Forest Petrified Forest National Park Arizona May 2022 The petrified wood in the park was formed 225 million years ago during the Triassic period and is 4 times as hard as granite and very colorful, due to the effect of impurities such as iron, manganese, copper and lithium present in the wood during the fossilizing process.

The petrified wood strewn in the Jasper Forest valley was once encased inthe surounding bluffs. When erosional forces removed the softer rocks,the petrified wood tumbled and accumulated on the valley floor. Once filled with fallen logs, Jasper Forest was plundered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by commercial collectors seeking petrified wood to sell as souvenirs. Outrage against Jasper Forest's devastation contributed to the extablishment of Petrified Forest as a National Monument in 1906.
