You may see the dancer's physical ability!? "Jatiswaram"
Jatiswaram-
Jatiswaram is combination of 2 elements, Jati(Rhythm) and Swara(Musical scale). This number is also a pure dance as Alarippu which consists of various kind of steps. A key of finding which Jatiswaram is Raga(Melody with particular scales) and Tala(Rhythmic measure). A song of Jatiswaram consists from 3 parts called Pallavi, AnuPallavi and Charanam. Additionally, there is a rhythmic part called "Jati" in the beginning of the song, which is supported by Nattvanar says some rhythm combinations called "Solkattu", and the dancer dances accordingly. Other part of the song is sang only with 7 kinds of music scales and words "Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da, Ni". There is no story or meaning in the song. Pallavi is repeated in the beginning and also several times for ending the parts and song. This song is consists by only steps, so you may see the dance's physical ability clearly, but also you can enjoy the beauty of the movements and the forms of dance.
When you learn Carnatic music, you start with singing "SWARA" which is like "Do Re Mi" in the Western music, but its "Sa, Ri, Ga" in Indian music. After completing the basic music lessons, next lesson is "Geeta" which is sang with lyrics. Then next lesson is called "Swarajati". Now a question comes. What is the difference between "Swara Jati" and "Jati Swaram"? The answer is, in a case of "Swara Jati", the song starts singing with Swaras, then 2nd time is sang by lyrics with the same melody. But in a case of "Jati Swaram" which is performed in Bharatanatyam, the song has only Swaras, there is no lyrics in it. The both are consists with Pallavi, AnuPallavi, and Charanam. but "Jatiswaram" as the name stars with Jati, there is rhythmic part in the beginning of the song. By contrast, there is no Jati part in "Swarajati". In the dance training, after completing "Jatiswaram", the dancer proceeds to a song called "Shabdam". Shabdam is a introduction for a training of expression.
