Ben K. Voss: Swallowing Worlds at Java Studios Gallery
The exhibition Swallowing Worlds by Ben K. Voss comprises of paintings and sculptures inspired by a remark by astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) that the orbiting path of Mars in relationship to Earth reminded him of pretzel loops. The sculptures on view are made of bronze, originally casted from actual pretzel conglomerations that suggest fossils or rock formations, while the paintings evoke the unknown and other worlds. BKV was born in Southeastern, Pennyslvania, considered a pretzel epicenter outside of Germany and now resides in Brooklyn, New York. He has exhibited at the Aspen Art Museum, Nurture Art Annual Benefit, Beginnings Gallery, Interstate Projects and has had residencies at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado and Whale and Star in Miami, Florida. His work has been published in The Where, the Why, the How: 75 Artists Illustrate Wonderous Mysteries of the Universe, published by Chronicle Books and has been written about in Art in America. In the winter of 2014, BKV was a visiting artist in the Foundation program at Rhode Island School of Design.
